'Hey, I’m back. …Yeah, I woke up my neighbor. Well maybe I wouldn’t be yelling if you’d keep your hands off my crops!'
'Our crops, comrade,' said the tinny voice from his headphones. 'So, this the neighbor you’ve never seen?'
He gave one last look at his door before picking the controller back up. 'Yeah. He seemed nice. He probably hates me now, though.'
...
Luo Binghe’s only thought, as he walked away from Shen Yuan’s door, was: 'I want to be that man’s wife.'
This was an entirely new thought for him."

Once he finishes moving his mum into her new care home on the Essex seaside, Martin doesn't know what he's going to do with himself. Who is he, if not a caretaker? Just a guy with two jobs, one empty flat, and zero friends.
He doesn't expect to find meaning in the shallows of the North Sea.
He also doesn't expect to meet a mermaid, but hey. Life is nothing if not unpredictable.

Summary
Martin gets a closer look at the calendar, and his breath catches in his throat. He's gotten a look at the year, and it's wrong, it's all wrong. 2018. October, 2018. Right there, in Martin's own handwriting, on a Saturday, he's written things on little dates that Martin can't read, because he can't take his eyes off the year. 2018. 2018. They look differently. They have scars they don't recognize. Their hair is longer. 2018.
Martin seizes the calendar off the fridge and goes back into the living room. Jon's still at the coffee table, poking through the tapes piled there, but he looks up when Martin comes back in and says, "Martin, where…" with a familiar bite in his voice.
Martin ignores him, stops him mid-sentence to say, "Jon, what have you heard about time travel?"

Martin and Jon wake up two years in the future. It goes about as well as can be expected.

When Jon asks Martin to Quit the Archives with him, Martin says yes. Things don't go as planned. In the Scottish Highlands, they hurt, and they heal.

i’m not normally into gouge out your eyes AUs but this one is so well done and so thoroughly thought out and well written… 11/10 excellent fic

“What--” He stops to compulsively lick his lips. His back hits the wall-- he’d started backing up at some point and he hadn’t noticed. He can’t tear his eyes away from the man on his couch. No. The creature. “What are you?”
Martin finally looks up from his book. He looks at Jon. He doesn’t look like Prentiss. He isn’t full of gaping holes that should have killed him, he isn’t covered in squirming, shiny white worms, he doesn’t smell like a moldy, rotting corpse. He looks like a pleasant, normal man. He has freckles scattered across the bridge of his nose, his cheeks. Monsters shouldn’t have freckles, Jon thinks nonsensically.
“I’m your boyfriend,” the monster sitting on his couch says, as if this is a matter that is not up for debate, that Jon has no say in.
