Did she want to deny him? Not really, but the embarrassment of Maya figuring out just what was happening on the other side of the wall had Anastasia pause. She could barely handle the grand commander on a good day - the constant teasing, the flirting, the pathetic kicked puppy act - but Maya’s chastising was a whole step up from his normal behavior. She tries to turn her face to break his gaze but a hand stops her, gripping her cheek and pressing back.

“Your heart’s conflicted,” he murmurs, two of the cards vanishing with a flourish. “You don’t have to choose between them, if you don’t want to.” He holds the two that remain out to her, face up. Strength and justice: the vice commander and the inquisitor, Crius and Tyril.

Cipher watches him for a long moment. The alleyway is very quiet, an owl hooting somewhere overhead. “You want me,” she repeats slowly, “to become the man you love… so you can confess to me.”

What followed was a long winded scolding from Khaslana, who proceeded to pick apart all of Stelle's flaws ("Your desk is a mess! Your attire is not work appropriate. You were supposed to turn in the progress report a week ago! Yada yada yada—")
Stelle thought bitterly that Khaslana would look a lot more handsome if he simply stopped yelling all the time. Then she took notice of the lack of a ring on his left hand and wondered if her boss was just chronically married to his work.
("It's because he's bitchless and chopped that he's taking it out on us!" Stelle would complain to Dan Heng later during their meet up. Behind the counter, Mydei dropped his plate from how hard he was laughing.)
or: despite being an engineer, stelle gets hired to work at a law firm. she decides that her efforts are better off spent setting up her boss with his ex.
