Because for Mello, hate is never truly just that. If she tries hard enough, she can pretend and think how simple is to pick just one color out of the palette of emotions that Near paints on her.
Mello has tried her whole life to cling to it. To think that red is the only thing she sees when Near is in front of her.
Rage. Not passion. It could never be that, even if anger also carries a certain shade of twisted love that she tries to ignore.
She wants to pretend she’s colorblind.
She wants to pretend she never saw anything at all.
Ignorance is truly a blessing, but Mello has always been a little cursed.

Summary
Mello still remembers the time when the collar in Near’s shirt had been twisted, and, without thinking, she reached to fix it, her fingertips grazing the warm skin of her neck. Mello had felt Near’s eyes on her the whole day, and her own hand burned until the next.
But Near's hair is something out of her reach; there’s almost no excuse for her to touch it, and the request is weird itself. Her pride works as a break, a halt in her intent of embarrassing herself by even asking in the first place. Because Mello knows very well that if she ever starts, she may never stop.
Sometimes, she really doesn’t trust herself. But Near does.
Maybe Mello isn’t the stupid one out of the two.

"Aw man," Yuuji says, and he can feel the tears pricking at the corners of his eyes again. "If we weren't about to go on a suicide mission, I'd… I'd probably try to kiss you right now."
Megumi stops breathing for a second. His grip tightens until it hurts. He looks at Yuuji, eyes wide, caught between panic and something that looks a whole lot like hope.
"Yeah," he says, his voice barely a whisper. "I'd probably let you."

He feels, rather than sees, Yuuji's sharp intake of breath.
"So..." Yuuji begins, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating right through Megumi's skull. "If I, hypothetically, got back on my knees..."
Megumi's head snaps up.
"…and cleaned this mess up for you, because I can't stand the thought of you being even a little bit uncomfortable… would that be… good?"

Fushiguro splutters. “What?!”
Kugisaki glares at him, eyes venomous as she angrily swallows her soup. “I don’t even like boys, but if that’ll wake you up and get you to do something about… this-” she gestures at him unhelpfully “-so that I can stop watching you pine and make those dopey eyes at him while I’m trying to eat my goddamn food, I swear to god I will kiss him. Even if that repulses me to no end.”
“I-”
“Save it.” Kugisaki cuts him off. “Your shikigami could do better.”
Fushiguro jolts, his mind unhelpfully supplying the image of his jade hounds nuzzled against both sides of Itadori, licking and pawing at him. He sighs heavily. “Tell me about it.”
