Summary
And maybe it’s exhaustion from hours upon hours on the road, and patchwork sleep that never got deep enough to even matter, or too much shitty coffee and gas station food. Or maybe it’s the fact that they didn’t bother to turn on the lights when they walked in, and the shadows are always kinder, combined with Buck sounding so earnest, and maybe a little bit heartbroken. But no matter the reason, Eddie can feel his anger draw back slowly, like the ocean pulled by the tide.
“I know, okay?” Buck breaks the silence again, cutting Eddie off before he can open his mouth. “I know it’s stupid. We had a good time, we had fun, that’s – that’s all it was supposed to be, right? A getaway. I know this last year changed things. We can’t just go back. I–I–I know that. It’s just sometimes I –”
His voice breaks. Eddie can almost picture the fragments of it hitting the floor.
“Sometimes I’m wondering if I still even have a best friend or –”
Eddie winces. “Of course you still – Jesus Christ, Buck.”
or
Forced into a hundred and thirty cubic feet of space for a thirty-hour drive – something’s gotta give.

Summary
“What do you think about?”
He thinks it’s a perfectly normal question to ask—who wouldn’t be curious about Eddie Diaz’s jerk off material? That’s just what being a good best friend means. Being curious. Asking the uncomfortable questions.
Eddie hesitates, lip caught between his teeth. “Nothing. Just—normal stuff. Ass, tits, shit like that.”
Buck raises his eyebrow at him skeptically. “Uh huh.”
“What?”
Affecting nonchalance, Buck shrugs. “You’re a detail-oriented person. I just… I don’t buy it. That you jerk off to the vague concept of a woman.”
Eddie huffs, cheeks going pink. Buck knows that look—he’s been caught in a lie.
“What do you think about?” Eddie asks, pivoting the conversation back to Buck.
Or: there was only one bed, and Buck is more than a little pent up.

Summary
“But that’d make me– uh.”
Buck doesn’t finish Eddie’s sentence for her, even though she can feel Eddie’s wide, brown eyes begging her to. She waits. Patient. Like Eddie would for her. She thinks being loved by Eddie has made her a better person.
And like Buck knew she would, because she’s the bravest person Buck’s ever had the honour of knowing, Eddie finishes and grinds out a quiet, “It’d make me gay. To want that.”
Buck nods. “Yeah.”
Eddie blinks, expression twisting like she’s fighting the wetness in her eyes.
“Buck.” There’s a warning edge to her tone.
Buck doesn’t back down — doesn’t really know how to. The question isn’t meant to be invasive; she just thinks maybe no one has ever asked Eddie before. No one ever asked Buck if she was into girls, and it probably would’ve sped the process up a little. Softly, she asks, “Are you?”
“No.” The answer is sharp, harsh and instant. It’s such a hard shutdown — like Eddie’s thought about it, and knows to reject it. Or has taught herself to. “I can’t be.”
Or: Someone leaves first. There’s no other version of this story. But sometimes, they come back, too.

Summary
Eddie can feel the goosebumps puckering across Buck’s skin. He’s torn between chasing that feeling, letting the goosebumps spread all over Buck's pale body—or rubbing his fingers over each individual hump and smoothing them out completely.
Eddie gives Buck a massage to help with the pain in his leg after he’s injured on a call. Things…escalate and they get their happy ending after all.
