Waking happened slowly, and started with a strange over-awareness of air against his skin. The difference between the air against one cheek and the pillow against the other happened next. The tickle of the feather against his nose and lashes, light that came and went on the other side of his eyelids abruptly like a candle instead of the sun. The smell of wax and flame. The sound of people coming and going, whispering soft. His own breath in, his own breath out. The decision to keep still so as to avoid having to deal with anything so trying as people.

An irrepressible part of Alan struck his pen through Jack’s words—can’t mix your innuendos like that, Jack, tugging on what you’re meant to stick into—and reminded himself that this was fucking, not writing. He’d have to learn to lose himself in this new role, to quiet the parts of his mind that Jack usually silenced by, well, tugging and sticking into.
“I’d be happy to demonstrate, so that his lordship knows he’s getting his money’s worth this evening.” Alan trailed his hands, coy and supplicating, along the inside of Jack’s thigh, coaxing him to spread his legs. “I’m quite skilled at whatever a gentleman wants, or however he wants his purse dipped into.”

‘How long did you play for?’ he asked Edwin. Questions almost tripped over themselves on their way out of his mouth. ‘And why did you stop? Were you any good? How did I not know about this?’
‘Er.’ Edwin blinked. ‘I played for about twelve years, I mostly stopped when I went to Oxford and it wasn’t as easy to practice, and you didn’t know about it because—I don’t know.’ He ran a hand through his hair, looking harried. ‘I suppose it just didn’t come up.’
Violet snorted. ‘Oh, of course. Never during the entire three months we were trying to unlock the secrets of a musical house named for a keyboard instrument.’

‘Perhaps we should give it a rest for today,’ Robin suggested, when they parted. His hand slid round to splay over Edwin’s lower back, keeping him close as he lowered his voice. ‘Go and try something I feel more knowledgeable about.’
‘No, no.’ There was a determined look in Edwin’s eye that meant he’d regrouped and was about to tackle a problem from an entirely new angle, and a gleam that had Robin intrigued. ‘I’d be a poor teacher if I couldn’t work with what naturally motivates my student.’
He took a step backwards. Slowly, eyes never leaving Robin’s, he undid the top three buttons of his shirt, parting the starched white fabric.
