    Summary

Caelus gets up from where he’d been idly browsing the Edo Star files in the archives, but a light tug at his foot stops him before he can take a step forward. Frowning, he looks down.

On the floor in front of him is Dan Heng’s tail, the end of it curled lightly around his ankle. Caelus blinks, then tries to pull himself free, but the tail only tightens its grip.

    “Um… Dan Heng?”

(Or: Dan Heng's tail has a mind of its own.)

    Summary

But Icyhot, who normally has one of the quickest reaction times in their class, looks dazed and dull, his eyes practically glazed over. He looks at Katsuki, but it’s almost like his brain is working too slowly to properly make sense of what he’s seeing.

“Midoriya,” Icyhot manages to get out, the name blurry on his tongue. “Someone’s…”

Deku pulls away from Icyhot’s neck with a slick sounding pop, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. Then he turns his head, and Katsuki stops breathing.

Because — because Deku’s got fangs.

Dialing a wrong number was no unusual occurrence. Everyone did it once in a while, and Katsuki was well aware of that fact.

However, possessing this knowledge made it no less aggravating for him to discover — a full two minutes into his rant about his day — that he’d been venting his frustrations to a complete stranger. As if that wasn't enough, said stranger was also inexplicably determined to hear his story to its end.

    Bookmarker's Notes

THIS FIC IS EVERYTHING. it’s literally a fucking encyclopedia of every morally difficult conundrum WTF. it explores these issues with so much complexity and nuance… i’m in awe. it deals so gracefully with complex morality, personal growth, radical change, systemic change, social reform and the way necessary reforms change with time, how quirk discrimination manifests in villainy and vigilantism, the observation that heroes ideally shouldn’t exist, cycles of hatred and cycles of abuse, forgiveness, overcoming guilt, navigating relationships and healthy communication, vulnerability, different forms of love, discussions of sex and intimacy and romance, and more, while also being lighthearted and dealing with these characters and villainy and the plot without taking itself too seriously. my favorite thing ever is how the league of villains just fuck off to europe or something bc they can’t be assed to be evil anymore. and i love how the writing and these complex discussions and dialogues are very introspective, clear, and organized dissections of feelings that read to be refreshing and enlightening instead of gauche and trite.

also such an epic unfolding of change, redemption, and recovery. shouto’s blossoming from a closed off and repressed boy into an honest, loving, and committed boy was such an earnest journey to witness. dabi’s change from someone bitingly harsh and twisted and willing to manipulate shouto (well, a bit) into someone chill and caring, albeit still a bit harsh, was also remarkable. by the end of this story, when shouto is talking to natsuo about gradual changes, i can really feel it in these characters. like i didn’t even fully register how much they’d changed until i cast my memory to 400k words ago and the dissocation, the anxiety, the rage, and i’m simply astonished at this organic transformation in these characters. the last time i witnessed character development so lovely and full of hope was in the karamazovs, particularly alyosha and dmitri. in some ways this story reminds me a lot of The Brothers Karamazov, actually. i’d count ivan but he’s a bit too emotionally tragic to make the comparison work.

HAHA ALSO I LOVE THE WAY THEY WROTE DABI’S SAILOR MOUTH. idk the way he cusses and his general syntax in this fic are so satisfyingly funny.

i also love how the canon divergence was carried out so subtly and satisfyingly. i’m personally very relieved they didn’t go too far past the overhaul arc because i have no clue what happens after overhaul.

and i love this writer’s commitment to cultural details like the ishiwarizakura, the spontaneous trip to aomori prefecture, the use of keigo, the recurrent tidbits on organic architecture, nods to uses of english phrases from natsuo, the whole marx quote “religion is the opium of the masses” being echoed around, the comment that “all families are fucked” which sounds like the tolstoy quote about all happy families being the same but all unhappy families being unhappy in their own ways, the use of celsius, the comment about not understanding why westerners wear shoes in the house… all of it just shows such careful attentive awareness of detail. idk the cultural identity of the writer but regardless this takes effort and active commitment to the resistance of literature as it “usually” is.

AND ONE LAST THING I NEARLY FORGOT. THE NARUTO DISCUSSIONS. that really hit me because in a way i also grew up with naruto and comforted myself with the themes and struggles and victories of the characters in that show. seeing these characters resonate with the same fiction made me feel even closer to them despite being fiction themselves. it made my heart ache for the innocence of young people and the pain we can feel and, in the aftermath, our inevitable search for comfort. we’re always looking for light.
