Summary
"How long until Buck's here?"
"You have maybe two minutes before you're being fretted over," Chimney helpfully replies, flashing Eddie a wide grin.
"Great." He tips his head back against the pillows with a wince, closing his eyes slowly.
Maybe he can pretend to be asleep when Buck gets here and then he won't have to face the wrath of a worried Buck.
He opens his eyes tilting his head to ask Chimney if he'll sneak in some coffee and then the door is swinging open cracking against the wall with a resounding smack.

"Out with it, you know I'm impatient. I can't take the anticipation."
"It's just - he asked me about divorce?"
Oh no.
"He did?" Buck's voice is significantly pitchier than it was before.
"Yeah," Eddie shrugs like this is a normal thing for a four-year-old to ask about. "And he said you told him we weren't getting divorced."

Summary
Maybe, if he just stands there silently, Buck will get tired of waiting and drop it and then Eddie can pretend to live in a world where there isn't happening.
"You know talking involves words leaving your mouth right?"
Wishful thinking.
"Yes Buck, I'm familiar with the concept."
"Just checking cause you're not really giving me much to work with here."

"Everything's peachy," he grumbles. "Now get up, cause I have a bone to pick with you."
Eddie's brows ruffle in confusion before he stands up like he can't help listening to Buck. "If this is about that mug I smashed when I was watching Theo I swear it was an accident."
"That was you? I've been blaming the ghosts for weeks."

Summary
There is a man.
Which is normal, he's not the only man in the world. Men exist. Men aren't just in fiction. Men also go into stores and buy things.
Eddie's just not sure men are supposed to look like this.

Summary
“Can you open your eyes?”
“No. I can’t look at you.”
“Because I’m gay?”
Buck sighs dramatically.
“Because you’re pretty. And because you’re gay. Because you’re gay and pretty.”
“Buck,” Eddie laughs. “Open your eyes.”
Or, Eddie comes out to Buck. Buck panics. Hijinks ensue.

Summary
“I'm gay.”
He's looking at his feet, because he hasn't quite come to terms with the fact that he's saying this in a room where other people, strangers, can hear it.
But this is still the first time he's said it this way: out loud, in a declarative sentence. Being nervous is fine. Frank said that being nervous is fine, and Buck just said he's proud, and the only thought Eddie has in his head is that it's embarrassing he can't raise his head and say it like a man, so clearly, he's going to need to hang on to other people's words for the time being, someone who isn't his dad trying to explain the ways Eddie's allowed to inhabit the world.
He doesn't need to ask anyone's permission to be who he is. That's also a thing Frank said.
in which eddie attends a self-empowerment group for gbtq men to supplement his therapy, and is empowered to: forgive himself, say "i'm gay" to his own reflection in the mirror, accidentally adopt an adult, make fried rice, and tell his straight best friend that he's in love with him. not necessarily in that order.

Summary
He wants the fish to be beautiful, something he can watch for hours, something that will take up space the way Eddie used to, without even trying. A creature that will grow comfortable in its new home, that will explore and settle and stay.
In the end, he chooses a betta with long, flowing fins, deep blue with streaks of red that catch the light like silk ribbons in water.
Buck loves him.
Loves the way he moves through the water, confident and unhurried. Loves the way he turns toward Buck when he leans in, like maybe he sees him too. Loves knowing that for all the loss and loneliness tangled up inside him, there’s something alive here, something he built a home for with his own hands.
Or; Eddie moves away and Buck spirals, buys a fish, joins the yummy mommies and loses his god damn mind.

Summary
“Shut up,” Buck grumbles at the dog. “It’s not a crush.”
Buck walks out of the room, out the backdoor, and into the yard, trying to ignore his large and judgmental dog following behind him.
“I don’t want to hear it,” Buck tells him as he gets the hose out to start watering his plants. “Keep it to yourself.”
“Who are you talking to?”
Buck startles and drops the hose, doing a quick 180-degree turn and coming face-to-face with Eddie. He’s clearly standing on something, elbows folded over the top of the fence and chin resting on them as he looks at Buck. His expression looks almost fond and it kind of makes Buck want to both preen and die of embarrassment.
