Summary
So much happened before they finally confessed. The snowballs accrued in a pile until its weight grew too much to bear, causing the great collapse of the avalanche which just so happened to fall in a closet. Ironic, right?
Named after some lyrics from Heroes by David Bowie. Based on Robin's speeches and mentor talks to Will in Season 5 and MWTFDYDgate.
Any quotes from canon may not be 100% because I'm writing all of this from memory.

Jonathan’s mouth opened, closed, then opened again. “Known?”
Will’s sigh was sharp, frustrated. “You know what I’m talking about, Jonathan.”
Jonathan’s brows raised slightly. They were really gonna talk about it. “Okay, fair enough. You’re right. I think I have a pretty good idea.”
Will’s attention snapped to him, surprised at his quick admission.
Jonathan lightly brushed Will’s watch that he knew matched Mike’s. “But I want you to say it, in case I’m wrong.”

Mike reels back like he’s been slapped. “You really think that I wouldn’t have cared if it was from you?” he asks, voice low, expression torn open. It’s not fair for him to look like Will is breaking his heart in two, not when Mike started it a long fucking time ago.
“It was obvious you wouldn’t have,” Will snarls. Hating himself for it.
Mike swallows hard, throat bobbing. His hands are still shaking; hell, all of him is shaking. “Then clearly you don’t know me at all anymore.”
“Yeah, I guess I don’t.”

In which Mike finds out the truth about the painting, Will accuses him of not caring about him anymore, and Mike proves to Will just how much he does care with a bundle of letters all signed with love. Features whipped Mike Wheeler, confident Will Byers, and completely over it Max Mayfield, with special appearance by smug Lucas Sinclair.
