Shauna’s alarm startles her awake with an unprecedented viciousness. Her eyes slowly open to look at her ceiling, room dark and cool from underneath her sheets. The sky outside is that special shade of blue that hints at the oncoming new day. She has about an hour until she has to be at school for morning practice, but there’s an event today that invades the forefront of her mind without her permission.
In approximately twelve hours, she and half of her school will travel to the big country club downtown for prom.
She’s dreading it.

“Don’t you dare ask me what took me so long,” Jackie says playfully, lips curving into a smile. There’s something tender in her tone. “You’d be stealing my line. Although…” And then her eyes crinkle. “…It wouldn’t be the first thing you’ve stolen that was mine, Shipman.”
What Shauna doesn’t know, but will find out soon, is that Jackie hasn’t cared about Shauna’s high school betrayal with Jeff in at least two decades now. She'd been trying to make a cheesy quip about her heart.
