Summary
"Hikaru" stands at the mouth of Darumazuka Tunnel. He'd expected road work signs, overgrown cracks in the pavement, an ominous feeling of impurities with ill intent lurking around the edges of his vision. He'd expected “do not enter” signs, a rusted gate – anything to indicate the twisted history of it.
The lack of any of that is what concerns him.
OR
I give Tanaka a gun and "Hikaru" gets only slightly less damaged by the tunnel.

“If you don’t wanna talk about whatever it is that’s upsetting ya, that’s fine.” Hikaru leans back against the wall, not looking at her as he picks at his shoelaces. “But if someone rejected ya, just say the word an’ I’ll thrash ‘em.”
This time, Asako laughs properly.
“I beat you every time we arm wrestle,” she reminds him, but then she stops smiling. It’s easier if she doesn’t look at him. “My uh… my granny died, actually. Last week.”
When she risks a glance at him, Hikaru is looking at her, his face caught in a soft, sad look she doesn’t want to understand. “Yeah,” he says quietly. He catches her hand, and squeezes it, slightly cold but firm and solid. “I’m sorry. That really, really sucks.”
Or, upset over losing her granny, Asako finds comfort in an unlikely source.

“One of these days,” Satoko says, when Kaoru and Yoshiki are meant to be sleeping, “you’ll have to look out for yourself. Don’t you think?”
“What does that mean?” Toshinori asks, as steady as he can manage.
“All I’m saying is, sooner or later, you best know how to look after yourself.” There’s steel to her tone, quietly firm and steady. Normally, she’s quick to volume; this is something she doesn’t want the kids to hear. “God knows you’ll need it when Kaoru moves out.”
After Satoko makes it clear where they stand, Toshinori goes to speak to his best friend about it all.
