    "Why are you not scared?"

"I am scared," Ilya admits. "I just am tired. Of hiding me. Of hiding you. Of hiding how much I love you. I want to go to the rink— how do you say it? Authenti."

    "Authentically," Shane supplies, automatically.

"Yes. Authentically. I want to go to the rink authentically, as me," Ilya confirms.

Ilya looks at Shane, pauses until Shane meets his eyes. "I want to say: I, Ilya Rozanov, love a man, and that man's name is Shane Hollander."

    Summary

Shrugging one shoulder far more casually than he possibly feels, Ilya says, “I like both. Is secret, okay?”

    “Okay,” Hollander says, voice cracking.

He doesn’t say anything else. The air’s so heavy around them that it feels like being in the middle of a scrum, the weight and heat of all those bodies pressing down on you. Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. Closer than he probably should.

A year after mysteriously dropping out of the 2009 draft, Shane Hollander is signed by the Boston Raiders, right behind Ilya Rozanov. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston — but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. Especially not when staying away from each other starts to feel just as impossible as getting along.

“Hi, is this Mr. Ilya Rozanov?”

“Yes, who is this?” Ilya replied, unease twisting his stomach.

“My name is Dr. Alicia Woolson, and I have you listed as the emergency contact for a Mr. Shane Hollander. He was brought into the emergency department at Montreal General Hospital after a car accident. He was unconscious upon arrival…”

Ilya couldn’t hear the rest of the words she was saying. He couldn’t listen to the list of broken bones, the internal damages that needed surgery to fix. All he could hear were the last words he said to Shane.

I don’t want to look at you.

I don’t want to talk to you.

    Go home.

    Summary

~And from your lips, he drew the Hallelujah

Ilya Rozanov leaves Boston and signs with Ottawa, trying to fight a slow slide into emptiness and find meaning in his life again. Shane Hollander is a lonely, struggling artist who lost his spark. When they meet by chance, they both have to decide what's worth living for.

Or…Shane never gets the chance to become a pro hockey player, so they meet later in life. Basically, they’re both sad boys, but the healing will be worth it (mostly soft fluff, very low angst). More baggage, fewer hangups.

~You see I used to live alone before I knew ya.

    ——————————————————

“So maybe we would have played together,” Ilya said.

“Yeah. Maybe we would have been rivals,” Shane said, and that got a grin out of him. He couldn’t quite imagine it, but he thought that would have been fun, facing off against Ilya Rozanov. In another life.

Ilya nodded slowly. “And yet here we are, meeting anyway. Maybe we were meant to.”
