Summary
In their unending conquest, Adlivun acquired two Coreflames that Amphoreus lost. The Coreflames are crucial for Amphoreus’ defense, but God-King Nanook has ignored their requests to return them. Acting as Amphoreus’ Ambassador, Khaslana travels to Adlivun to retrieve them.
“You won’t return the Coreflames,” Khaslana concludes through gritted teeth. “Fine. God-King Nanook, under the Rite of Communion, I challenge you to a duel!”
If you won’t give it, then I’ll damn well take it.
“You wish to seize the Coreflames from me,” Nanook marvels. When Khaslana doesn’t deny it, his mouth curls into a dangerous smile. “Very good. Khaslana of Aedes Elysiae, I accept.”

Summary

But someone gets there first.
“The only one who can kill you is me,” Phainon tells the still body in front of him, sitting in the circle he drew. Nine flickering candles anchor the corners, holding vigil. Taking a knife from his bag, he bows his head and presses his lips to Nanook’s forehead, whispering an apology. It’s easy to do when he knows the dead won’t hear, when he knows that he’s more likely to bleed out tonight than succeed. He sets blade to flesh.
“Even in death,” his voice chokes up, “I won’t let your spirit know peace.”
