    Summary

Iroh had been worried that the gentle tea server from Ba Sing Se wouldn’t survive the Fire Palace. But he can see traces of him in this young prince, this almost-Fire Lord.

Ozai didn’t crush Zuko the way he had intended. He survived. He grew strong, and gentle, and more honourable than Ozai could ever imagine.

And Iroh is so proud of him.

Follows Iroh’s thoughts on his nephew in Book 2 and Book 3 and beyond.

    Summary

When Zuko dashes into the sitting room, it is with the same wide-eyed panic that he ran from Azula’s smoking hands when he was a child. Iroh bites down on a smile. Zuko looks the same, even now, a decade later with a scar blossomed over one side of his face, green and brown robes replacing the solitary reds of his childhood. His hair is puffed up around his face. He looks like a very frightened, very windswept turtle-dove.

Zuko dives behind Iroh just as Aang breezes to a stop in the doorway.

Five times Zuko hid behind Iroh, plus one time Zuko stood proudly in front of him.

    Summary

Link grew up hearing of the legends, yes, but what kid hadn’t been raised that way? He never understood why it was such a big deal to his family, that he attempt to pull the Master Sword in Castle Town. Hundreds had tried, and they had all failed. So why?

Then there’s their want for him to become a knight, like the rest of the men in his family. It sounds okay, he supposes, after he’s heard it from them so many times. Soon, it becomes clear that the attempt to pull the Master Sword will become the “pinnacle of his young life”, in theory. But why, if the mere attempt is what’s important to everyone else?

Naturally, those questions cease to matter when Link manages to actually pull the damn thing.

Fuck quickly becomes the appropriate word, he realizes.

    Summary

When Ethan was fourteen, his world went up in flames. When he was fourteen, he took his mother's gun and escaped the city with a wagon of other survivors who knew better than to betray their names or faces to the smiling people in uniforms who claimed to be aid workers. He learned early that help is not always help, and that people are rarely who they claim to be, or even who they think they are.

He learned early not to let anyone else decide for him the difference between monsters willing and monsters made.

(Or, Ethan Winters, instinctive parent, Raccoon City survivor, and That Guy who the Gods just cannot seem to let die, does not kill the severely abused, mentally ill child bioweapon he finds in Louisiana. Instead, he takes her, and runs. To say this changes things is an understatement.)
