“Kuibin, stop,” Quanrui breathed, his back pressed against the cold brick of the alleyway. The smell of woodsmoke was thick in the air, but all he could focus on was the heat of Kuibin’s hand on his wrist. “What if someone walks by? What if they see us?”
Kuibin didn't pull away. He only leaned closer, his voice a rough whisper against Quanrui's ear. “Let them look.”
Thirty years later, Shen Quanrui is a man who was never seen. He followed the rules, took the arranged marriage, and built a life out of silence and proper Mandarin. He thought he had successfully buried the boy who stood in that alleyway.
But when a single phrase at the dinner table—“Eat before it gets cold”—shatters his mask, the sterile air of his modern apartment feels too thin. He realized too late that you cannot kill a memory by ignoring it. Now, the ghost of a noodle stall owner is pulling him back to 1980s Beijing, to a fire that never actually went out and a choice that has left him starving for decades.
Or: Quanrui spends thirty years pretending he isn't in love with the man from the noodle stall, only for a slip of the tongue to ruin everything.

Gyuvin's shirt is still distractingly wet. The lake light catches on the bridge of his nose, the water on his eyelashes, the flush still high in his cheeks.
