And thus begins the cycle.
At the beginning of every week, Robin and Nancy exchange papers. Robin hands in a short story, or the first few chapters of a project she’s working on. Nancy gives Robin some essays, or some articles she’s working on for the paper.
Nancy always thought that if she ever somehow got into fiction, it would, at the very least, be the published kind. But something keeps her coming back to the bleachers every Monday morning to swap projects with Robin Buckley.

“You gonna sing tonight?”
Nat scoffs. “No.”
“C’mon, it’s fun.”
“I’ll stick to writing songs and not singing them.”
“Come on,” Lottie says, leaning over to nudge Nat’s shoulder. “Singing is a great way to let out pent up feelings.”
Nat nods, watching Van gesture towards the audience of tables filled with other drunk people cheering and singing along, Tai among them, watching with obvious heart eyes.
That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.
“I’m good.”
Lottie puts her glass down on the table, empty. “Suit yourself.”

“What’s your venmo?” Natalie’s voice is softer with Travis gone, residual anger beginning to drain from her eyes and stance.
Lottie smooths down the fabric of her shirt, painfully aware of what Natalie’s expression and proximity is doing to her. Shit. “ It’s ‘lottiematthewsphotography’. Two ‘T’s both times, one word, all lowercase.”
Nat nods, tongue poking out between her teeth as she types. “Lottie Matthews, huh?”
Lottie nods. “Engagement and wedding photographer.”
“I gathered.”
Lottie winces. “Right. Sorry.”
Nat lifts a shoulder. “Don’t apologize. I’m Natalie. Scatorccio.”
Lottie holds out her hand instinctively, and Natalie, for some reason, takes it and shakes.

It’s one thing when Lottie Matthews transfers to Wiskayok High halfway through their junior year. It’s one thing when she joins the soccer team even though it’s the middle of the year, even though tryouts are already over.
But this? This is crossing the line.
“That’s great, Lottie,” Shauna says, sipping at her cafeteria container of milk. “Congratulations.” Nat’s jaw is just about on the floor. Because no. It is not great, not at all.
“Thanks,” Lottie says, smiling, scrunching her nose the way she does when someone praises her. “I’m really excited.”
Van looks at Nat, then back at Lottie. “Camp Green Pine? Isn’t that the camp Nat works at?”
So, yeah. Apparently Lottie’s going to be her coworker for the summer.

Lottie nods along, smiling, clueless. “That sounds fun.”
Nat grimaces. “Yeah. Yeah, theoretically.”
Lottie catches on, squinting. “What’s wrong with it?”
Nat looks down. “I’ve sort of been… lying to my coworkers?”
