“Hi,” Caitlyn says. “It’s sorted.”
A pained wince flashes across Vi’s face but she nods, scraping a bloody-knuckled hand over her face and sniffing hard once. She spits out a gob of red-streaked mucus and speaks down at the spot where it lands between her feet. “Thanks.”
“Can I take you home?” Caitlyn asks.
Shame rises off Vi like hot steam. She hunches in on herself again, runs a hand through her hair, still refusing to look up at Caitlyn. When she speaks, her voice is tight with strain. “You've already done a lot, Cait. I can have Powder—”
“Vi,” Caitlyn cuts her off. “You can tell me no, if you don’t want me to take you. I can go back to my flat and leave you with your brother and sister. But I am asking you — can I take you home?”

“Cait, don’t let that slip,” Vi’s voice is soft but urgent. So is the gentle pressure she exerts on Caitlyn’s elbow, coaxing it back up. “You want the swelling to go down.”
“I know,” Caitlyn mutters. This is hardly her first shiner, but she dutifully follows Vi’s instructions, pressing the towel back against her eye with a wince. It hurts, the flesh is tender and painful, but what’s worse is how it impairs her vision completely. It’s hard, not panicking, when her mind and body both flinch at the cold and the pain and the darkness.

“It’s just water,” Lara says, flushing anyway and thinking of how she had practically leapt out of the jeep when she had been dropped off, barely stopping to hastily roll up her shirtsleeves and rinse off her hands under the sink on her way to find Sam. She hadn’t even paused to dry them. “You know. Same thing you’ve been splashing around in all day while I was hard at work, straining my back and sifting through the sand for maddeningly long hours.”
“Pfft, I’ve seen your back,” Sam says, wrapping her arms around Lara’s torso demonstratively, reaching down to tug the tan linen shirt free from where it had been tucked into Lara’s pants, then sliding her hand underneath, below Lara’s undershirt to drag up her slightly sweat-damp skin, “it can handle a bit of strain. Anyway, you’re not fooling me, you big baby. Spending hours digging around for old pieces of pottery is, like, your favorite thing in the world.”
“Second favorite, maybe," Lara says, kissing her again.

Lara Croft is used to being late. It's not a trait of hers she's particularly proud of, but it's a useless one to deny. For a brief time, at uni, she'd thought she'd been cured of the condition having dedicated herself to the studious use of alarms and reminders and personal calendars to cope with her course load and the unexpected emergence of her increasingly rich social life. But after Yamatai, she'd slipped back into old habits, had resigned herself once again to the fact lateness was, perhaps, another aspect of the Croft legacy she'd inherited.
Unfortunately for Lara, she didn't have any extraordinary, reality-warping or roguishly near-fatal excuses to cite this time: she'd simply slept through her bloody alarm.

And Lara’s laughter, so bright and startling, draws echoing giggles from Sam, deflates the suffocating tension that had been building between them for months. Sam gives in, lets herself sink forward to rest against Lara’s body for just a moment.
“I don’t want you to,” Lara breathes into Sam’s hair after a long, silent moment. “I don’t want you to get over me.”

“Sam, look over here!” Lara’s giddy voice cut through Sam’s thoughts and the next thing she knew she’d been pulled over to look at a tapestry still hanging across the far wall, Lara with one hand on her hips guiding her and the other on the top of her own hand tracing over a language Sam couldn’t begin to understand but Lara murmured all the translation directly into Sam’s own ear. There was only one problem.
Lara’s voice was low, each word another breath of hot air brushing over her ear, Sam could barely keep her head straight. She couldn’t keep hold of the details just the way Lara’s voice was melting in her ears, the way her hips were cradling over Sam’s, her chest pressed up against Sam’s back. Sam was dying here.
“Sweetie,” she groped for something, anything that’d get her on the road to groping Lara. “You really need to get out those wet clothes."

Caitlyn, who missed literally no detail when it came to Vi, grinned in satisfaction. "Oh, darling, we've developed quite the problem, haven't we?"
"I don't know what you're talking about," Vi deflected.
In four long strides, Caitlyn pinned Vi to her desk, her hands working at Vi's pants to tug them down. "So, you're not wet right now?"

This and the giant banner hung from the balcony above the bar are incontrovertible evidence of the fact that today is her 40th birthday.
Vi is 40 and has never met her soulmate and it feels like shit, man.
