One moment he was sitting lazily on the couch nursing a beer, the next people were rushing past and screaming. Head hazy and disconnected Jeremy watched the scene unfold from his seat until Brooke grabbed hold of his shoulders, pulling him to his feet. She was shaking him and pointing, her mouth moving but no sound reaching comprehension. Suddenly reality crashed into Jeremy like a bowling ball, straight in his gut as every sound, smell, and sensation flooded into registration. Flames licked every wall around Jeremy, his lungs filling with smoke. Jake's house was on fire.

Summary
Since moving here for college, Ray has seen some pretty crazy scenes in the city, particularly after their baseball games, but this feels bigger than that.
Absent-mindedly, he wishes he was back in his hometown in Maine, far away from the chaos that seems to lurk beneath every city street, ready to erupt at the slightest opportunity.
The world as they know it comes to an end on October 12th 2009. Now all they can do is find a way to survive not just the crazed monsters that have taken over what remains, but each other too. That might be the hardest task of all.

First, there was a moment in silence.
In Pete’s swaying peripheral vision, boys drifted, not nearly as many boys as when they last saw light, but, Ray was there, pressed up against Pete’s side and that was all that truly mattered.
Shadowed by the looming figure of the major, stood, stately, atop a sputtering vehicle, in the pale glow of early morning, all of them trudged together, towards their graves, children ardent for some desperate glory.
But then, there was a moment of noise.
And in less than the amount of time it would take to buy a ticket, everything changes.
Or: On the second morning of the long walk all broadcasts are abruptly cut due to 'outside interference', there is still a long way to walk to reach potential safety (Garraty's mom's place) but with the competition dismantled an opportunity to look out for each other arises and friendship takes precedence.

“Okay. If you don't like your wish and you don't like mine, if you had a do-over, what would you ask for?” Ray asks, unimpressed, like this is a dare that he doesn't expect Pete to be able to complete.
Pete had spent a lot of time thinking about this after the Walk. It’s near impossible not to, really; you’re given the hardest choice you’ll ever make after the most horrific few days of your life, and you have forever to stew in the consequences of it. Pete has been stewing in it, indeed. “Do you really think you can wish for anything?” he asks. “It shouldn’t have been possible to get that kid an elephant so soon, but—”
“You want a magical wish, then? Like a fucking genie? It’s all hypothetical anyway. Go for it.”
Their feet move in tandem, like soldiers. The horrible ache in Pete’s stomach has gone away. This is the only time it ever goes away: here, in a dream, with Ray. “Well, I’d ask if I could just go on walking with you forever.”
