Summary
Her hand hovered above the doorknob. She shouldn’t. Kaz valued his privacy like a miser valued his coin. But the sound came again—an exhale, ragged and low, and this time she couldn’t ignore it.
Inej slipped inside.
The lamp was low, burning more shadow than light. At first, she thought the dark heap on the floor beside the bed was just discarded clothing, but then it shifted, and her breath caught.
“Kaz.”
He sat slouched against the mattress, his cane discarded to one side, his shirt smeared crimson across the abdomen. The dark patch was spreading, his gloved hand pressed futilely against it. His head lolled slightly toward her voice, eyes glazed and unfocused, but still sharp enough to spark when he recognized her.
“Hello, Inej,” he intoned lowly, the ghost of his smirk tugging at his mouth. “If you’re trying to rob me, you’ll have to get in line.”

In a twist of events, Kaz is gravely wounded and Inej isn't about to let his stubbornness get him killed. She sets about patching him up.

Her fingertips dig into his chest as she inhales slowly, prompting him to do the same. Her scent is back, a welcome guide through his brainfog. He exhales somewhat raggedly, but it's only serotonin flooding his system this time. "It's nice that everything is sensitive, not just pain," she remarks, keeping herself as still as possible while she finishes bandaging his chest.
