“You’re chattering,” Joel says simply.
Ellie opens up the coat and looks at it suspiciously, as if it’s some sort of trick. After a few seconds, she must decide she’s cold enough to accept it even if it is a trick, and she wraps the coat around her shoulders, tucking her knees up underneath it. He watches her for only a second longer before fixating back on his sparse pack. She looks too soft right now, and that won’t be good for his health. He prefers her spitting and cussing.

But then he stands between her and soldier with a gun and refuses to move.
And beats his knuckles bloody killing the guy.

Which – thank you captain fucking obvious – makes sense, and honestly, it’d be fucking creepy if she did trust people in the snap of a finger. Ellie can imagine it in her mind: a weird kind-of-old man (it’s not David. Not fucking David) offers her a home, somewhere safe, he gives her food. All he asks for is for her to see him as family.
He doesn’t say it though. He fucking implies it.
No, it’s not fucking David. It’s Tommy.
So, when they’re all at the mess hall on Sunday night, shoveling away at their dinners – her, Joel, Maria, and fucking Tommy – she can’t help but feel the need to actually fucking explode when Joel says: “I’ve got a three-day patrol comin’ up tomorrow at noon. I was, uh, thinkin’ that you could stay with Tommy and Maria while I’m gone. Sound alright, Ellie?”

For some reason, this is the last straw. The thin string of control she had over…everything snaps like her hair tie, and she can’t help the sob of frustration that erupts from her as she tips her head back
“What the fuck!” Ellie shouts, voice raw and terribly broken even to her own ears.
Joel, who had been silent pretty much this entire time, is quick to go on guard and reaches for his gun on pure instinct. He softens a second later when he sees what caused the outburst. “Hey, hey, it’s okay. It’s just a hair tie.”
“No, you don’t understand,” she shakes her head, “That was my last fucking hair tie, and I don’t know where else I’m supposed to get one in this stupid fucking forest!”
She shouts that last part too, kicking an offensive shrub poking out from under the snow.
