“You’re fuckin’ thirty, you have just turned thirty, twelve hours ago,” he says incredulously. “You’ve still got your whole life ahead of you.”

“But I haven’t done anything!” she exclaims dramatically, gesturing with her glass hard enough that water splashes onto the table.

“You’re months away from finishing your residency,” Jack points out dryly as he reaches over to rescue the glass from her hand entirely. “And you had a paper published in The Lancet. I’d say those count as pretty significant achievements.”

Samira rolls her eyes at him again, like he’s deliberately missing the point.

“But I haven’t done anything else!”

Or—Samira kicks off her thirtieth birthday party with an existential crisis.

    Summary

Life has occasioned to kick Jack Abbot in the teeth more times than he can count. More times than he has fingers, more times than the five toes he lost or the five toes he still has. He keeps this in mind when Samira Mohan emails him asking permission to submit the article they co-authored two summers ago, Efficacy and Complications of Intracardiac Pigtail Catheterization in the Emergency Room Setting, to present at a conference in Philadelphia.

He has not seen her for almost two years. It took six months for him to get her new phone number, and another six months after that to convince her that he really meant it when he said that he wanted to keep in touch.

    Summary

Samira Mohan’s life is divided cleanly into two distinct halves: before PittFest and after it. She will never again be the person she was when she clocked in for that shift. She will never forget the give of her patient’s skull beneath an EZ-IO or the slip of the pigtail catheter between her fingers. Even months later, she’s still struggling to unpack all the ways that day changed her life.

Perhaps the strangest residual effect is that Jack Abbot sort of, inexplicably, becomes her best friend.

    ---

Or: Samira Mohan finds her way through residency and subsequently stumbles onto a whole lot more.

"You know what your problem is?" He steps closer, close enough that she has to tilt her head back to meet his eyes. "You're so afraid of feeling something that you'd rather feel nothing at all. You'd rather be miserable and 'serene' than happy and—"

"Than what? What's the alternative? Let myself care about you and then watch it destroy everything I've built?"

"Who says it has to destroy anything?"

"History. Experience. Every Jedi who's ever fallen because they couldn't control their attachments."

"Or maybe they fell because their Order made them so afraid of attachment that they never learned how to handle it. Maybe if someone had just let them feel—"

Samira is a Jedi Knight who knows her Code by heart. Jack is the smuggler who makes her want to forget it entirely.

    Summary

Samira was, in practice, the ED’s attack dog, and the attack dog of all the ED’s many and varied denizens. She was very good at her job, maybe because she looked so sweet and had such a reputation as a bleeding heart that no one expected her to be so fucking mean when the occasion called for it.

She was also, in practice, right now, like, while they all watched in frozen horror for the first twenty seconds of it happening, enduring a rare statistically significant loss - patient vs physician. She was, in this moment, leaning against the hub and bleeding through the gauze Dana and Robby were pressing against three different penetrating stab wounds on her anterior abdomen while Robby bellowed for a gurney and Dana hollered for security.
