At FEDRA school, Ellie'd been mostly just "Williams." She liked being a Williams, like her mom. But Jackson was waving this new "Miller" option in her face, and she couldn't stop thinking about it.
It was stupid to be so stuck, when she could just bring it the hell up, and 1. hear Joel rasp "You can tell me, Kiddo," 2. Watch him try to guess what she wanted so he could encourage it, 3. Make her feel like an insightful fucking genius for wanting it. Which was awesome, actually, if she could just decide what she wanted.
OR, how Ellie navigates an opportunity she never thought she'd have: to choose who she wants to be and what her life can mean. And drags her family along for the ride.

Summary
The thing about spending so much time around Wade was that ninety percent of the time you could ignore one hundred percent of what he was saying, and you wouldn’t miss a thing.
But every now and then, something sticks. It would worm its way into Logan’s brain and make a home for itself, awakening things he didn’t even realize lay dormant and causing mini existential crises on a near weekly basis.
It was never obvious in the moment. Just a word or phrase that would stick out and then bam! Cue the incessant rumination and restructuring of his brain chemistry.
The latest one being the word housespouse.
It was a stupid word.
It wasn’t even technically a real word.
But it was stuck. Ratting around and ringing in his ears every time he caught himself doing anything remotely domestic (which happened to be a lot more than he’d realized).
