He knows that for most kids his age, owning a car is a status thing, a symbol of wealth and power in the complex social hierarchy that is high school, but to Eddie it represents more than that. Having his own car means freedom from his mother and her unshakable hold on him, the possibility of someday leaving both her and the shitty town that created her in his dust and moving on to bigger, brighter things.
