Anaxa takes out a penknife from his pocket and slides it along the fabric of that thick black turtleneck. On the side of the neck, directly over the carotid artery, is a white patch that’s been clawed half-loose.
A scent blocker.
He tears it off without a second thought, and ‘Phainon’ hisses when the sticker leaves his skin red and raw.
“Poor thing,” Anaxa murmurs softly, taking that familiar pale, haggard face and turning it from side to side, as if inspecting a rare specimen. “To have been reduced to such a sorry state… the burden of the ‘world’ should’ve never been yours to bear.”

“One more condition,” he says, meeting Caenis’ gaze directly. A pair of smoke-amber feline eyes flash in his mind—and to give himself the courage he needs, Phainon tries to pretend those eyes are what he’s looking at instead. “None of the other Chrysos Heirs can know about this matter.”

“...Mydeimos,” the Flame Reaver smiles; a terrible, vacant curve of the lips. “I’ve missed you.”
Mydei feels fucking sick to his core.
Then Phainon—not Phainon but not not Phainon—crashes his lips into Mydei’s own. The Flame Reaver licks into the space of his mouth with cruel precision, swallowing all of Mydei’s gasps and breaths into himself, as if he were a hollow vase and Mydei were the spring that could fill him whole.

Phainon’s head leans heavily on Nanook’s palm for support, his thoughts slow and dragging as molasses. “I…I had to.” He knows it’s not the right answer, even if it’s true. It’s not enough, but what else was he supposed to do? “I didn’t want it; I don’t want anyone else’s mark on me,” he insists, adamant, but his voice is hoarse and weak.
Mind in disarray, Phainon doesn’t notice the slipup in his words, the sun flaring on his neck.
