But when he was really hurt, when he remembered how it felt to be trapped, and feared it would happen again, or when the guilt she’d taught him to feel flipped too far the other way and tried to eat him alive, he just shut down like this, and didn’t, couldn’t, speak at all. And that always worried her.

    “Can I look yet?” Lord burbles. The water muffles the sounds above, but he can barely make out Collector’s squeal.

    “Not yet,” they chirp, “just let me… there! Done! Look, look, look!”

    There’s the tiny feeling of two hands tugging on his scruff, the only part of his body breaching the waterskin - he blinks the boiling water from his eyes, feeling each bubble burst playfully against his skull, and peers upward. A smattering of stars fills the sky directly above them - scattered crudely, surrounded by deep empty space. The stars are clustered into two bloblike shapes, although he can’t recognise the fine points of either.

    “It’s us!” Collector shrieks. “Look! There’s you, and there’s your horns and your claws and your tail - and there’s me! And there’s Eggy! We’re holding hands, see? See?”
