“What’s this?” Wild asked, moving to look at the open textbook, Wendell right behind him, and Kat cringed.
“It’s- um,” she stuttered, taking a step forward but ultimately hovering a few feet away from the brothers as they took in the algebra problems, Kat’s scratched-out attempts at solving them, and the tear in the paper from where she’d gotten so frustrated she’d ripped the pencil through it. Wendell picked up the paper she’d been trying to solve the problems on and turned back towards Kat with an incredulous look on his face.
“Did you summon us to help you with math homework?”

Amanda expected her to hold out her hand hesitantly, to be resigned to the stitches in the quiet way she had been to everything else since Shasta bit her. Instead, she clutched her hand tighter to her chest and shook her head fervently.

He’d never really expected an apology from Siobhan, especially considering he didn’t particularly blame her for anything. Still, he couldn’t deny that, as unusual as this was, it was a little nice for her to apologize for something that most people wouldn’t even consider as having made him uncomfortable.
“Um, it’s fine. I’m not, like, mad at you for any of that,” Raul said after a moment. Siobhan just shook her head.
“Raul, I literally called you your deadname like two weeks ago. When you came out, I told you you couldn’t be friends with me and Sweetie and Sloane anymore because you weren’t a girl. I called you the wrong name on purpose for months! I was horrible.”

Secretly, Bear did not know if what she was saying was true, but in her heart she had to believe it. She couldn’t imagine a world in which a baby girl with dark curls and a pig snout for a nose was sent to cause the end of humanity, and not to save it. So she told a tale of humanity’s bright future, of men who sought to end it, and an army she led to stop them. If she let herself be childish enough, she could imagine that each hybrid she saved was a pointy-eared girl with dark skin and snorting laugh.
Bear had sworn years ago that she would protect her sister, and she had failed. Maybe saving every hybrid kid she came across wouldn’t bring her baby sister back, but it would have to be good enough.
