OWN flinched. The mere thought of her was enough to make her not-very-human heart do very human things. Like jump, for instance. Her hands flew to her chest in an instant, and she forced herself to breathe, fingers curling against the fabric of her shirt like whatever organ lay beneath might've slipped through the bars of her ribs, and leapt free.
Though when dealing with her, OWN supposed it was always a possibility. She'd always been disgustingly good at winning the hearts of everyone around her.

Summary
Kanade was sure if she looked a little more to her right, she would've been able to see the fireworks perfectly fine with her own two eyes. She was sure she would've found them beautiful, too. But somehow, they seemed even more so when she saw them reflected in Ena's—warm like liquid gold; her very own pool of sunlight; the centre of her universe, almost close enough to touch.
In the moments thereafter, she stared in silent awe as their light continued to refract off of Ena's wide eyes, leaving star-like imprints on her irises. Now, more than ever, she found her so, so—
"So pretty," Kanade whispered.

“You,” she eventually settled with, pointing her index finger far enough forward and with enough force that it nearly collided with Mafuyu’s collarbone. Her other hand came to rest on her hip. “Were you watching me the whole time?”
(Those were her first words to Mafuyu. Brusque and impatient and rude but—undeniably beautiful, too. Mafuyu hoped they were far from the last to trail from her lips.)
Mafuyu blinked thoughtfully. Her grip tightened on the strap of her bag. “Yes,” she said simply. Then, “You have a leaf in your hair.”

With all of her heart, Mafuyu loved her girlfriends. Being with them never failed to make Mafuyu feel safe. Seen; loved. She would spend every day, if she could, curled in their arms - or simply hovering near them. As long as they were hers and close enough to touch, she’d be content.
There was just one tiny issue.

Summary
It wasn’t her fault.
Mizuki just had to remind herself of that, now that her voice had betrayed her. Now that it’d molded her name into a thoughtless whisper, a broken plea; a prayer, almost, spoken in abhorrent adoration. And一 God. Much more than herself, what she hated was how with hazy vision and unsteady feet, it almost didn’t matter to her how much she was going to regret this in the morning. A secret part of herself - small and ugly and hidden deep - even believed that she wouldn’t.
After all this time, she still couldn’t regret - nor forget - loving Mafuyu Asahina.

Summary
When she finally found the courage to raise her head, untucking it from her neck like a turtle pulling away from its shell, she saw a girl around her age at the top of the yellow slide that served as the park’s centerpiece. Her eyes were shut, completely at ease with the world around her, and a blissful smile curled at the edges of her lips. As the score lay scattered and forgotten at her feet - or maybe, it had already been carried away with the spring breeze to a place even more unreachable - Mafuyu thought it would be cruel to define her with just a single word.
Even crueler, though, was not calling the view in front of her what it was. It was unmistakably beautiful, and with parted lips and widened eyes, Mafuyu was sure that her expression showed it.

“Yuki— Yuki, wait—” Mizuki squeaked, squirming slightly when Yuki’s teeth nipped at her lower lip to silence her. Her hands flailed uselessly at her sides, trying to hold onto something, at least - the sink, Yuki, anything - to try and ground herself. But— Even when she did finally manage to curl her fingers around Yuki’s biceps (her very slightly toned biceps, her mind unhelpfully supplied), it did nothing.
Unsurprisingly, perhaps.
Because how could anything possibly be enough to bring her back to earth when Yuki pulled her into her orbit and began to press a series of urgent, feverish kisses against her cheeks?

And when she plucked one from the arrangement and twirled it between her fingers, she thought of how desperately she wanted to admit that they were beautiful.
That Mafuyu was beautiful, even more than the flowers.

“Excuse me?” the girl called, and Mizuki’s heart stuttered at the unexpected softness of her voice. Clutching a hand to her chest as if she could’ve contained its pulse, she blinked so rapidly that the room almost began to spin, before noticing that the girl was now staring at her, her head tilted over her shoulder and the sunlight streaming behind her.
Like this, she seemed ethereal; almost unreachable - unapproachable - and it was with the warmth of the sun reflecting off of her eyes that she spoke again. “How do I tell somebody that they’re annoying?”

Mizuki loved the feeling of blatant affection bursting beneath her ribs when she observed the dizzying effect of the crowd on her girlfriend, just as she loved listening to the drum of Shiho’s heartbeat as she stumbled into Mizuki’s arms. She lived for that feeling. She reveled in it - the moments that would have her own heart rabbiting gently in her chest and begging to break through.
It was like it was the very reason she breathed, and with every second spent, there was a newfound appreciation for what it was like to run after something instead of away from it.

Summary
Like a pendulum on a swing, Ena’s eyes darted back and forth over the words on her screen until her vision became blurry. If she blinked, she feared she might find them gone; left only with the dull glow that illuminated her room and the aching, crushing loneliness that always seemed to accompany her. If she stirred, she might find the overwhelming happiness that enveloped her heart misplaced and rouse from this unthinkable dream.
And yet, Kanade’s message persisted.
No matter how long Ena stared or how many unsteady, broken gasps tumbled past her lips, K, The K - the very same one who had turned her entire world on its axis with her song - had really asked her to draw for her. The elation settled soon thereafter the realisation and it blanketed her in a quiet warmth that nobody had recognised she’d so desperately needed. Nobody until now, at least.

Yuki blinked down at the girl before her. Watched as she quickly grew bored of her position and shifted, her arms forming a makeshift pillow that almost completely blanketed her book - the paragraph she’d been reading lost on her and just barely poking out beneath the sleeve of Mizuki’s cardigan. Took in the way that her clothes weren’t disheveled in the slightest, almost as if she hadn’t even left.
Like she hadn’t been gone long enough for Yuki to miss the absence of her radiant demeanor and soul-scorching smiles.

All he could think was that he hadn’t even known how immensely he would miss the feeling until Ena had pulled away. That he’d been utterly blind, to not have known it to be possible to feel so much about a kiss before, which was something he hadn’t even realised he’d cared about, until then.
“So?” Ena whispered and her words, coupled with the maddening way she swiped her thumb across his cheek for the second time, were all it took to break— no, to completely shatter his silent spell as her breathing hitched. “How was that?”
It was then that he realised that he still hadn’t said anything at all.
To amend it, he opened his mouth to speak. Then closed it.
or, Mafuyu didn't quite understand why Ena looked so unspeakably fond when he responded the only way he knew how after a kiss.

Summary
When it was her classmates who had turned to her with pleading eyes, she hadn’t particularly cared. She wasn’t naïve enough to believe that their intentions were anything but to further their own gains, and any emotions she had felt were superficial, at best. A facade kept up only in the name of maintaining cordial relationships with them all.
But一 Now that it was Ena, who stared at her with a smile that did not quite reach her eyes before dipping her head and turning away; Ena who no longer made the scathing remarks she once did, Mafuyu found that she did care.
She cared quite a lot, actually.
or, when Ena accidentally confessed, she never expected for Mafuyu to refuse to let her live it down.
