It’s a late evening on a random Saturday in July when Henry’s mouth decides to not be tactical and ignore all the warning signs flashing inside his mind.
“Alex, would you like to start a family with me?”
Everything falls quiet around them the moment the words are out in the air in between them, and Henry can feel Alex freeze where he’s laying next to him on their king-sized bed. Alex went to the gay bar with June and Nora on a Thursday night and walked out with the blond smokeshow he’d been exchanging heated glances with for hours.
His name was Henry, and his hands were on Alex and under his coat as soon as they walked through the front entry of his beautiful, enormous fucking brownstone. Alex would circle back to that later.
Henry swiftly divested him of two and a half layers as Alex gripped him by the elbows, just trying to hold on. Eyes slipping shut on an appreciative groan, Alex swayed forward to capture Henry’s mouth with his own.
A firm palm at the center of his chest stopped him halfway there.
Alex blinked to find steady blue eyes staring back at him.
“No kissing, if you don’t mind,” Henry said coolly.

“It sounds like the Alex I grew up with,” Henry tells him. He pauses, thinking if he can say it, but he holds on to the light, and tries, “The one only I got to see.”
And Alex doesn’t leave him any room for doubt, telling him, “That Alex will always be yours.”
Henry closes his eyes, chin quivering in the wake of new tears, grateful and pained, and even all these years later, still quietly in love.

Summary
Alex peers up at Henry’s face, the familiar tenseness in his jaw and mildly disinterested eyes nowhere to be seen. Instead, Henry’s expression is open and borderline delighted, like Brie used an extra strong shot of sorcery to draw Henry in and melt the ice that he usually stays locked behind.
Suddenly, Alex’s vague crush on an unapproachable coworker feels realer, all because he’s standing there and looking at Alex’s daughter like she hung the fucking moon. He’s treating the most important person in Alex’s life—his entire goddamn heart—as if she truly matters to him, giving her fist bumps and smiling at her and telling her she’s beautiful like her dad.
It’s doing weird things to Alex’s chest and making his palms sweat even in the air conditioned office, and he can’t decide if he’s okay with that development or if he wants to stick his head in Brie’s Easy-Bake oven.

He's incredible, but the second day of the job that will make or break his career is not the time to be starting a relationship; even if he kind of wants to scream every time he thinks about Henry.
So you can imagine his fucking surprise when he walks into the office the next day and sees none other than his Henry—elevator Henry, blue-eyed, British, dreamy, with thighs for days Henry—standing and talking to Pez. It’s in that moment that it all clicks, and Alex realizes. He’s Henry, as in, Henry, his other boss. Henry, his boss, a.k.a. the man who was on his knees in Alex’s bedroom last night. He is so fucked.
