Biana slowly unfurls the letter, fingers shaking despite herself. It’s not for her. She already knows this, and the small, loopy words designating the invitation to one Mr Fitzroy Avery Vacker only serve as an all too unnecessary reminder.
She ignores them. If she squints, the letters almost rearrange themselves to form her name instead, a slight glimpse at a world where things are different, where things aren’t so complicated, where…?
Where there is a chance, no matter how small, that she can spend the rest of her life with Sophie.
She folds the paper up, carefully smoothing down the creases with her thumb. Tucking the paper - and the name it carries - well out of sight and memory,
if only to hope for a little while longer.

“Oh.” Sophie exhales softly behind her.
Biana jumps slightly, and turns around, catching a glimpse of a small, wistful smile. “What’s Christmas?”
“Uh, human holiday. You decorate a tree, put lights up, give each other presents, that sort of thing.” Biana doesn’t miss the way the words stick in her mouth on the way out.
“Sounds fun. Do you ever miss it?”
Sophie turns away from Biana slightly, blinking a little too much to be plausible.
“Sometimes.”
