Buck’s breath sharpens. His chest heaves. His eyesight blurs. His hands clench at the injuries and his body twists and turns, unravelling on the floor and kicking out. His mind can’t focus anymore. He can’t hear Eddie; he can’t hear himself. Everything is a loud buzz and his vision is spinning so rapidly he feels as if he’s become the robot instead.
But there is something within that draws his attention and settles him. A low thud and a churning stomach; not a hunger pain or a wound, no. This is something new. Something different.

He chances a glance at Eddie, and his smile is something fond, and Buck’s not exactly sure what he was hoping for, but this at least isn’t bad.
Eddie looks up at him, cradles his face, and says, “Very pretty, baby.”

Eddie holds his breath, not sure where to put his arms, and watches Buck’s face. The man is deeply engrossed in whatever mindless drivel he’s watching on Instagram, gnawing on his lip, making it pinker. Suddenly, a bright light draws Eddie’s eyes to Buck’s phone screen, and he freezes.
Buck’s watching a makeup tutorial.
A moment passes where Eddie just watches Buck watching the video. It could be a coincidence, just something that he happened upon in his scrolling, but Buck’s watching intently and he doesn’t scroll past it. In fact, there’s this look in his eyes—something akin to longing.
Eddie builds up the courage to tap Buck’s shoulder. He gestures towards the screen. “Is that something you like?”
