Summary
“It is strange, though,” says Frodo at length. It’s so quiet that Sam isn’t sure it was meant for him.
“What’s strange?” he asks after a few seconds have passed.
Frodo skims his fingers just below the surface of the water. “Being back here, I suppose,” he says, still in a soft, low tone. “I never thought….well, the last time we were here, it was beautiful, of course. But there was this dreadful business always looming over me. It never left my mind, not once. So I never got the chance to settle in and truly enjoy this place, not in the way Bilbo does. I had hoped, before, that if I did get the opportunity to come back things would be different. But it's…” he trails off. His hand hangs limply in the water. “It’s strange.”
The hobbits visit Rivendell once again on their homeward bound. Frodo tries to cope. Sam watches.

Sam breathed in and out shakily and lifted Frodo's hand, pressing the palm of it against his own cheek. Elrond watched him, the desperation in his face, the determination, and something that had never quite healed tugged empty and hollow at his soul.
He had stood just so. He had held her hand and kissed her cold fingers. He had whispered of light and hope to her fading spirit, but she had sailed in the end. For a moment he was dizzy, disoriented by the tangling of the past and future; he was holding Celebrían as she faded, a wounded halfling as he slipped into shadow; he was standing at Círdan’s side at Mithlond while half of his heart tore away–
I cannot save him, thought Elrond; they will yet be sundered.

For those who aren't aware (because I'm not sure how common the Hanahaki trope is): Hanahaki is a fictional disease that entails flowers blooming in a character's stomach and/or lungs as the result of unrequited love. Typically, the character either finds love that is requited or succumbs to the disease and DIES.
This is Hanahaki with a twist.

AU: In a less powerful, less united Federation, Romulus takes an opportunity to attack Vulcan and Federation planets begin taking in Vulcan refugees. One of these refugees, a young Spock, stays with the Kirk family on their farm in Iowa. Everyone thinks it's temporary, but after a few years Earth becomes as much a home to Spock as Vulcan ever was, and the Kirks-- especially Jim-- become family. Eventual K/S.
