Summary
It is difficult to make out anything in the dark of the sunset. Blood-red rays of light faintly illuminate a dark shape; it is a human, Patrick realizes, a person cowering on the ground. A man, Patrick supposes, from the way his voice sounds when he speaks up.
“Please,” the man says as he holds up his hands, “I mean no harm to you, or anyone else.”
Patrick can’t see much of the stranger. He’s covered by a worn-out, dirtied cloak, half his face obscured by the hood, a scarf and covered by his arms, still held up protectively in front of him. As much as it makes him feel guilty, Patrick can’t deny the relief that the stranger is scared of him, rather than being a threat himself. He orders his dogs back, and they obey, though their growls and sharp teeth are still enough to scare the unknown man in front of them.
His eyes are the only thing Patrick can make out. They look at him with fear. They seem off, in a strange way that Patrick can’t really describe. He can’t make out much of the stranger’s face and yet, what little he can see is just… There’s something weird, something that sends a shiver down his spine, lets him guess just why his dogs reacted so nervously.
