Summary
Through his cracked-open window, he can hear traffic in the distance. The sound is clearer at night. It's temperature inversion—he learned that long enough ago that he doesn't remember who told him, but if it wasn't a teacher it was probably Buck. At night, the ground cools, chilling the air near the surface, refracting sounds so they travel farther. It's not an echo, but it's something like it.
In his room, in the warm yellow light, his mattress shifts as someone sits down, and Chris thinks about echoes.

Summary
"You don't see the problem," Buck says finally, in as measured a tone as he can, "with getting married to me. For tax purposes."
"Not just tax purposes," Eddie says indignantly, like that's Buck's main sticking point. Buck finally turns his head and looks at him. Still stupid. Still beautiful, in a light-colored Henley that makes his skin glow, his long fingers curled around the neck of the beer bottle resting on his knee. His big brown eyes and the encouraging little smile on his lips, like he's offering Buck a special treat, instead of a lifelong fucking commitment of platonic marriage. Buck wants to kiss him, or maybe strangle him. Either one would serve Eddie right.
Or: Eddie proposes marriage (platonically). Buck spirals.

Summary
There's a part of Eddie that's tempted to do something insane, something that'll absolutely fuck up this Eddie's day, if he's a real person with a real life that Eddie is just borrowing for the time being, and not an elaborate figment of his own subconscious. Something like hopping on a plane to Los Angeles, tracking down whatever version of Buck lives there now, seeing what happens.
He wants to know if Buck would smile at him again, without the weight of history between them. If maybe, in a different world, he'd want Eddie.
Or: in the aftermath of a deadly car accident, Eddie finds himself able to visit other lives he could have lived: other worlds, other possibilities, and maybe - just maybe - a chance to get things right.

Summary
“H-hey.” He frowns; he’s sure he remembers seeing Eddie on the calendar to work today’s shift. He longs for the days he would know without question because any time one of them took a day off they were in constant communication anyway. He doesn't remember the last time Eddie texted him. “Where’s Eddie?”
Hen and Chimney share a look. It makes Buck stiffen. Something’s wrong. He can tell something is wrong.
“Buck, Eddie didn’t tell you?”
“Tell me what?” They share another look. Hen frowns. Buck can feel the panic rising up in his belly. If he’d managed to eat his breakfast, he knows it would be coming up. “What’s wrong? Is Eddie okay? Is it Chris?”
OR;
the rift between buck and eddie keeps growing.

Summary
Eddie shifts against the counter. “You’re the one who moved out, Buck. I spent three months in Texas trying to sell that house, and I came back and you’d just—moved out.”
Buck’s throat hurts. “I was saving you the trouble of asking me to do it.” Eddie stares at him. “It’s a two-bedroom. It’s not like we were going to get bunk beds.”
“We could have—” Eddie looks away, takes a gulp of his beer, then looks at the floor. “And this is the place you picked?”
“You bought your house in Texas without my input.” Buck knows it sounds petulant. “What’s wrong with this place?”
“There was a man living in the attic,” Eddie hisses.
“Yeah, and if I’d stayed, I would’ve been the guy living in your attic! I would’ve been—the guy who still couldn’t let go, you know? The guy still living in Abby’s place—” He cuts himself off and hopes Eddie doesn’t think about that too much. “I’m just trying to be normal, okay? I’m trying to figure out how people act when they—but you keep pushing me away, and you’re here now.”

Summary
Eddie is telling Becca Peters how he helped Abuela make tortillas over the weekend when Mike Nelson says, "Wow, Eddie, you're so gay."
From his tone, it's obviously an insult, even if Eddie can't quite figure out how. Mike isn't saying he's happy, but that's the only meaning of gay Eddie knows. And it's a weird word to use, anyway. He thinks of it as mostly extinct.
If Mike wasn't a jerk and a bully, Eddie could just ask him what he's talking about. But Mike is one of those kids who turns ignorance into another thing to tease about, and that's the last thing Eddie wants.
So he goes with the tried and true eight-year-old's defense: rubber vs. glue. "I'm not gay," he snaps back. "You're gay."
"You're the one who's cooking," Mike sneers, and Eddie adds chef?? to his mental definition of the word, below happy.

Summary
Buck has never looked at him like this, never noticed how alive he is. Eddie swallows, throat bobbing with the motion, and suddenly Buck understands that beneath all of Eddie’s miles and miles of smooth skin, there are muscles and arteries. There’s blood. He’s a diagram laid out, organs tucked under bones.
