Summary
Harry’s standing outside the pub, huddled under the awning to avoid getting rained on, having a smoke. He’s not usually a smoker, but sometimes it helps to calm his nerves, and he needed to get out for a while and have five minutes to himself. A breather. That’s what Niall calls it, at least. ‘Need a breather?’ he asks, when they’re out together, surrounded by his friends. They’re good when they’re on their own, familiar with each other, and those are the times when Harry feels most comfortable. With nobody around to see them, judge them. It’s only been a week and Harry is grateful that Niall’s been so understanding, and knows when it’s getting too much for him. Feels it when Harry’s about to run away, and lets him have a moment to himself, so he’ll come back and stay.

Niall groans, kicks the sheets off of his legs before pushing himself to feet and stalking towards his bedroom window. He opens the curtain, sighs when he sees Harry crouched on the other side of the window pane- But he opens the window anyway. "How many times have I told you not to climb up here?" Niall hisses. He curls a hand around Harry's bicep and pulls him inside. "You're gonna get hurt again. And since you've already sprained your ankle, you're running the risk of re-breaking the bone and-"
He stops when he notices Harry's ruddy cheeks and wet eyes. "What's wrong?" he asks softly, a lump in his throat.
Harry opens his mouth to speak, but nothing comes out.
"Harry," Niall says. This time his voice sounds just as panicked, and he feels it. "Haz, what's wrong?"
"Z-Zayn," he stutters, pausing to clear his throat.
Niall blinks. "What about him?"
Harry stares at him; looks lost and confused.
"Harry, you're scaring me. What-"
"He was in an accident."

“Look at this little family,” Harry murmurs.
“You big softie,” Louis says, but his voice is so steeped in fondness that Zayn can almost taste it, and he feels warm in a way that has nothing to do with the crush of bodies around him. He cranes his head a little and Niall meets him halfway, anticipating it, grinning as their eyes meet and reaching a hand up to grip comfortingly at the back of Zayn’s neck. Yeah, his gaze says, you belong here. We want you here. I want you here.
And then the chicken is burning and Harry yelps like he’s the one being singed and they fall apart as easily as they fell together.

He doesn’t know how to describe it, but he’s sure. Very sure, that it is a positive feeling. He doesn’t know how to react to it, really.

“Way I see it, people get tattoos for one of four reasons. Zayn, he gets them to commemorate important ideas and thoughts. You, you’re about marking important events in your life, even if it’s in a way only you can understand. Me, if I were to get any it’s about celebrating the people I love, but nobody has ever been important enough to me to do that, to permanently sear a remnant of them into myself because whether they’re still with me or not, I want to keep them close.” Niall explains quietly, keeping his eyes locked on the line he’s engraving on Harry’s arm.
“And what’s the fourth reason?” Harry asks, just curious to hear more of how Niall’s mind works while he still has a chance.
“I reckon it’s because they want to remember they're alive.” Niall breathes out. And yeah, Harry thought it might be something like that, but it sounds so perfect coming from Niall’s mouth. He wants to kiss him, just to see if that helps remind either of them that they're still alive too. Because Harry isn't so sure that he is anymore.
