Summary
Edwin's sitting on the floor with his back to the bed, and Niko is flopped on it so her head is dangling a little over the side. Niko looks sad, even from upside down. "Edwin..."
He lowers his book. "Yes?"
"Are you in love with Charles?"
Or, five conversations that really needed to happen, post-canon, and one that will. "Sometimes, when you admit something to yourself, you can no longer live with it as a secret."

Summary
He looks tired and sort of ill, laying flat on the ground like he'd tumbled onto his back. The window is open enough to permit a sharp breeze to enter, and the room is too cold and fresh. Crystal sighs.
"What's up?"
"I think I'm gay," Charles says despondently to the ceiling.
Or, Charles is aromantic, he just doesn't have the words for it.

Summary
"Can you explain this?" Charles begged.
"Charles, don't leave," said the boy behind them.
Edwin glared, but forcefully smoothed his expression when he looked back at Charles. "Hell is ... perceptive. It likes to snare souls. What is ..." He swallowed, throat moving with it. "What is the thing that you are most scared of, right now?"
"Losing you."
Or, what if Charles got lost trying to find Edwin in Hell?

Summary
"Edwin," Charles said slowly, holding his hands out. A hug felt like overstepping, not offering felt worse. "Talk to me."
"My obituary," Edwin snarled, "called my 'disappearance' an act of God."
Charles exhaled. There was something soft and vulnerable underneath the anger, something Charles wanted to hold and protect. Because fucking hell. He couldn't imagine what it would be like to return from what must have been decades in Hell - if he'd been taken in 1916 and was only just back, that was over seventy years (yes, Charles could solve puzzles when if suited him) - and find out he'd been forgotten. Worse, that his loss had been labelled as a divine act, like it was deserved or right or ...
Or, what happened after Charles followed Edwin, that freezing night in 1989.

Summary
Edwin is so still and his face so blank, and Charles strolls over as if he isn’t suddenly nervous himself. Edwin doesn’t look up, so Charles kneels down to Edwin’s line of sight.
“All good, mate?”
Edwin looks right at him. There’s something cold behind his eyes. Charles wants suddenly and quite desperately to pull him into a hug tight enough to ward against the hurt there. He doesn’t, because the first time he’d casually put an arm over the boy’s shoulders he’d flinched – and Charles is never going to push where he’s not welcome.
“What does this mean ‘the First World War’?”
Or, Charles catches Edwin up on things he missed when he was in Hell. All in all, it's rather a lot.

It’s only after he’s turned away from the light that Charles’s brain catches up with him. Edwin has been in Hell—actual Hell—and as far as he’s been told, that’s not something that happens without reason.
Or, Charles puts his foot in his mouth and asks Edwin why he was in Hell.
Follows on from the scene where they first meet in S1E7.

Summary
When a witch’s spell sends Edwin back in time to 1973, he has to learn the hard way that you cannot change the past.
You can, however, fill it with love.
*
He finds Charles in the lounge, strapped into a bouncing chair whilst his mother naps on the sofa. Charles is wide awake, burbling happily as he sucks on a toy, a mop of fine curls already sprouting from his head. His eyes dart around the room and when they land on Edwin, they linger, and he pulls the toy from his mouth and smiles.
Edwin has never been fond of babies, but Charles is the exception to the rule. The smile on his face is not nearly as charming as the one that has Edwin weak at the knees, but it is adorable in a different way entirely.
Charles babbles a stream of nonsense and then throws his toy towards Edwin. It lands on the floor between them and Charles’s face crumples when he realises that it is no longer in reach. Edwin does not think. He steps forward and picks up the toy, crouching down before Charles to press it into his tiny hand.
He does not take it. Instead, his hands reach up to pat at Edwin’s face.

Summary
Charles is bored.
It’s the all consuming boredom that makes his skin itch in a way that nothing can satiate it. He’s not able to focus on anything and god has he tried: the words of his book are swimming off of the page and escaping him as he tries to focus so he abandons that, the paperwork does the same thing, and even reorganising his back of tricks holds no joy so he leaves it half unpacked, trinkets and tools scattered across the floor.
He’s bored.Monty seems to not be having the same problem though, because this entire time he’s been sitting peacefully reading some book on astrology, curled up in the armchair next to Niko’s bed.
And unfortunately for him, Charles is going to change that.

Summary
This happens, sometimes. Charles looks at Edwin as if he’s hung the stars himself, waiting patiently for instruction that he knows will always come. Edwin is never quite sure what to make of it—the two have never discussed it outright—but he certainly doesn’t mind. This half-dazed state is part of Charles, and he appreciates it for what it is.
Edwin taps his cheek lightly. “Charles.”
“Hmm?”
“If you have any needs that are not being met, I would like you to tell me.”
Charles blinks, eyes bright. “Whatever you want is brills,” he says simply. “Always is.”

Charles spent a full year making making sure Edwin was comfortable with intimacy. Now, Edwin wants to know why Charles never talks about himself.Series

Summary
“A deal. You pretend to be my boyfriend for a few weeks, show up at my house, escort me to social functions and such. Your overall person, manner and opinions should be enough to truly scandalise my parents. You will only need to be yourself, only less... charming.”
Charles gave him a bright grin. “You think I’m charming?”
Edwin ignored him. “And I will act all smitten with you. When they offer you the money to break up with me – and rest assured, throwing money at problems is their only way of handling anything – you will take it. I shall be horribly heartbroken to make them feel guilty and any subsequent romantic partner who is a bit more... mellow than you will be quite welcome.”
Charles stared at him, unsure of how he could’ve ever thought of Edwin Payne as innocent. “Damn... you are a conniving little bastard, aren’t you?”-
Charles Rowland's first impression of Edwin Payne can be summerized as privileged, rich and aloof – also incredibly pretty, but that’s besides the point. However, when Edwin presents him with a scheme to piss off his conservative parents and get some money out of them in the process, Charles can’t resist the siren call of causing mayham for some Tories.

Summary
Edwin returned to the envelope, from which his attention should never have veered, and opened it with a single, precise cut. The letter opener was returned to Charles – another brief, searing touch – as Edwin carefully removed and unfolded the glossy paper. The crest in the letterhead, a bloody wound against the white background, immediately caught his eye.
“St. Hil’s, innit?” Charles, leaning over Edwin’s shoulder, confirmed what they both knew. They exchanged a dark, speaking glance. No, neither of them had fond memories of that place.Or: Edwin attends his high school reunion and is very normal about his (legal) partner.

Summary
Edwin sighed and unfolded his hands to push his hair back. “I suppose this was inevitable,” he allowed.
Charles beamed. “That’s the spirit. Look at it this way — you’ve never been to a house party before, and here’s one that’s right up your alley!”
“Ominous and full of peril?” Edwin asked sardonically.
“Exactly!” Charles agreed. “This way you get to go to a party you’ll actually like, because it’s actually a mystery. And once you solve the mystery, the party ends. I couldn’t have thrown you a better one myself.”Series

Summary
“Were you like Brad and Hunter, when you were alive?” Niko asked dubiously.
Charles stilled. “Well—maybe. I think I was always a little bit different from other guys, to be honest,” he said, like he was confessing something. “My old mates were definitely cut from the same cloth, though.”
“Oh,” Niko realized. “Is that why you want them to be good guys? They remind you of your friends?”
“Er…” Charles trailed off. He squished the ball of PlayDoh in his hands. Gray showed between his fingers. “Not exactly. My old mates weren’t, ah. Well. They weren’t good guys, in the end. I mean, Brad and Hunter do remind me of them. A lot, actually. But it’s more like, it would be really nice to know that guys like James or Pete could be nice.” He contemplated the dough in his hands with a small frown. “I just wonder, if those guys had been born a little later, maybe they would have turned out better? Maybe we might have been alright.”
Niko followed his gaze. Charles seemed to be getting PlayDoh residue on his fingers. They were turning gray, now, too.
“Were your friends nice to you?” Niko asked, suddenly worried.
Charles met her eyes, but he had a faraway look on his face. “Sometimes,” he said.

Summary
Edwin stumbled and choked on a laugh. Charles kept a solid hold on him so he wouldn’t fall. “What exactly do you call this style?”
“It’s an underground dance,” Charles said dismissively. “Doesn’t have a name. It was all the rage in my day though, trust me.”
Edwin laughed out loud this time. “Of course, I forgot about the ballroom dance craze of 1987.”
“Exactly. Now hold on!” Edwin knew Charles well enough by now to intuit what he meant, and he latched onto Charles’ shoulder with a death grip just before Charles dipped him low to the ground.
“You’re going to drop me!” he sputtered. Charles laughed and hauled him back up. They both knew full well that Charles would do no such thing. Edwin just liked to act scandalized for the fun of it.
“Have I ever dropped you before?” Charles asked smugly, falling back into a two-step.
“There’s a first time for everything,” Edwin retorted.
