Blood from the cut above his eye is smeared across his forehead, up into his hair; his face and beard have been mostly wiped clean from the combination of tears and pressing into James’ hoodie. Despite the lingering hint of fear in his eyes, Carl is here in the present, no longer stuck reliving past horrors. James’ own shoulders relax a wee bit, even though the cold from the damp concrete beneath him is seeping into his bones. “And I’m the one who got stabbed.”

There is an obvious conclusion to be reached here. Why would two people, one of whom is downright cantankerous at the best of times, both seem more relaxed after spending time in each other’s company? What would make that same cantankerous person flash the other person a look she can only describe as soft as he walks away?
