Summary
Solo has never felt such pain in his life. Sure, he was a soldier, subject to brutal training and the occasional bullet wound. He was a spy, on rare occasions captured and tortured for information– a rag thrown over his face and a bit of water dumped over his head, or a few solid punches to the gut. But there was always a purpose for that pain. Growth for him, or power for them. But this? This was pain for the sake of pain, and he’d never felt anything like it. This was pain purely for the sick fascination of a man who wanted to know how he would react to it. There was no scientific purpose, no search for useful knowledge.

Summary
Mac is sitting cross legged on the floor, and Pepper is laying down in front of him with her head almost resting on Mac’s shoulder. It’s rare for horses to lay down unless they’re sick, and for a moment Jack is terrified that’s why Mac’s crying. Except Pepper seems fine, and Mac would have come and gotten him right away if something was wrong. Which means Pepper laid down because of Mac, and it makes Jack feel so warm inside.

There’s a slight rustle as someone steps into line behind him, and Rick bristles slightly as the person gets a little too close for comfort. He’s got the card in the slot already, but he’s loath to enter the pin with someone practically breathing down his neck. He starts to turn, a sharp Buddy, do you mind? on his lips, when there’s something hard and cold pressed against his spine. Rick goes frozen still, recognizing the deadly muzzle of a small handgun at his back. The man, as he can tell now, leans in close, his breath warm and tickling the side of Rick’s neck.

It’s freezing cold and pitch black when Bruce jerks awake. For a moment his brain is a jumbled mess of confusion and blind panic before everything hits him like a bucket of icy water. It takes him much longer than he’d like to admit to realize he actually has just been hit by a bucket of icy water. He has a head injury, then. Of course. He’s hit with what he can only assume is the third bucket of ice water then, leaving him gasping and spluttering as the freezing water fills his nose and mouth. He coughs harshly, tasting iron in the water running down his face. Head injury for sure, and bad enough to bleed.

As far as Bruce is aware (and he’s done his research), he is the only one who knows Billy Batson’s true identity. He has a sneaking suspicion that J’onn might know, purely based on the mind reading, but he also knows J’onn likes to let them all have their privacy if they want it. So it’s just a suspicion, and he’s no way to prove it, so definitively, he’s the only one who knows that Shazam is actually a fifteen year old boy. (There’s another unprovable suspicion that Clark knows as well, but the previous statement still stands.)

It’s better for Aramis this way, to not give Porthos more than a passing chance to change his mind. Better for Athos, easier for him to accept his friend’s, his brother’s decision without giving him the opportunity to realize he can’t stomach the idea of Aramis leaving. He knows if he sees him again, he won’t be able to keep quiet, won’t be able to stop himself begging Aramis to stay. Yet, even still, there’s a part of him that hopes Aramis will come by one last time before he leaves Paris. A part of him that hopes his brother will saunter up the stairs and into his apartments, hat in hand, smiling as always.

He thinks maybe he should try to get up, try to get to Mac, but his brain is too slow and his body won’t move. He leans his head back against the wall and tries to breathe through the pain. Blackness creeps into his vision and he fights it as hard as he can. He tries to think of Mac, of the scared look on his face when Jack caught his eye the last time, but the pull of sleep is too strong. His head rolls forward and he slips into darkness, soot-stained blond hair and tear-filled blue eyes the last things he sees. -
