Summary
“Now that is a handsome man.”
The first thing Hen notices about New Recruit Eddie Diaz is that he is in possession of a remarkable set of abdominal muscles. The next thing she notices is the wedding ring.
And Buck is staring at him like a piece of meat.
“Oh, nuh-uh,” she says immediately. “Don’t even think about it, Buckley.”
or, Eddie is new, and married, and Buck won’t stop flirting. 5+1.

Summary
One of the first things Ravi learned when joining the 118 was to, under no circumstances, think too hard about Buck and Eddie’s relationship. But brother, they could try make his job easier.
“I mean, I get it,” Buck’s saying, overhead, and Ravi’s knee-deep in literal human crap and even he can smell that shit from a mile away. “You and Tommy have a lot in common.”
or, Ravi continually suffers as a third-wheel.

Athena just looks grieved. “Why, then,” she says, “did you get military-grade handcuffs? Were the pink fuzzy ones not macho enough for you?”
Her tone drips with derision. She’s absolutely going home to tell Bobby all about this. “We kept, uh, breaking the pink fuzzy ones,” Eddie admits, and then, “Buck, don’t preen.”
“I’m not preening,” Buck says, probably definitely preening, but like it’s his fault, okay? It’s good to know the bicep curls are working.
or, the handcuff fic.

Summary
“Was I… satisfied with the sex?”
“Yes.”
“The… one time we had sex five years ago?”
Buck doesn’t seem to pick up in her voice the insinuation that this is a legitimately insane thing to ask, because he says, “I just want you to know that I’m really sorry if you weren’t. I was a different guy back then, and I’ve realised a lot of the sex I was having was probably really phallocentric and only focused on my own pleasure rather than my partner’s—”
“Oh my God,” Natalie says.
“I just wanted you to know that I’m really sorry if you felt unsatisfied.”
or, Buck calls various women he's slept with. Eddie is perpetually long-suffering.

“Wait,” Lucy says. “Isn’t that country guy doing a show there tonight?”
“Country guy?” Chimney says.
“Yeah, you know him. What’s his name—Gary something? He’s the one with the…” She does an ambiguous gesture, snapping her fingers to remember. “Glitter. And cowboy hat. Right?”
The image vaguely rings a bell in Eddie’s head. To Buck, he says, “Don’t you listen to a singer who wears glitter and cowboy hats?”
Buck’s face has steadily gone redder and redder and he’s stoutly avoiding eye contact, and oh, yeah, he so does, and yeah, this is so him. “…No.”
or, Mr LAFD Updates Man meets a popstar.

Summary
“I’m not regretting breaking up with Taylor,” Buck says. “It just… would have been nice to go with someone, is all. Don’t get me wrong, I’m completely over Ali, and I’m happy for her and everything, but…”
“But you also want to show that she’s not the only one who could move on,” Eddie says.
And yeah. That’s pretty much right on the money. Always Eddie, to see him, ugliness and all. It’s a shit thought to have, because the last person Ali Martin’s big day is about is him, but—
Well, but. He’s thirty-one and in love with his best friend, who is decidedly not in love with him. He thinks he’s earned the right to be a little uncharitable.
Then Eddie says, very casually, “Just take me.”
Or, Buck gets invited to an ex’s wedding. Eddie volunteers to come as his date.

Summary
“Wait, you need a sitter?” Chimney says. Eddie nods. “Maddie’s brother got back in town a few nights ago, he’s looking for work.”
Eddie frowns. He doesn’t know much about this mysterious brother of Maddie’s – doesn’t even really know much about Maddie, either, aside from being Chimney’s girlfriend – but he’s pretty sure every time he’s been brought up in conversation it’s not been particularly inspiring. “Is this the brother who flunked out of college because he spent all his tuition on a motorcycle?”
Chimney colours a little. “Um. No?”
or, Buck babysits Christopher and Eddie is—fine about it, actually.

Summary
“Oh my God,” the girl says.
It’s not the oddest exclamation Eddie’s heard from a person who’s just crashed their car into a telephone pole, but more the way it’s said: something dizzied and a little resigned, as though she is both concussed and mostly just inconvenienced by it. It’s enough for Eddie to peer into the window as Buck heaves at the car door with the jaws of life, armed with a penlight. “Ma’am, can you tell me your name?”
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” the girl says, which doesn’t quite sound like a name to Eddie. He’s just about to tell her as much until she goes, “You’re LAFD Updates man.”
or, five times someone recognises Eddie as the LAFD Updates man.

Eddie doesn’t realise the pattern until Karen says, “You’re collecting us like Pokémon.”
“What, Wilsons?” Eddie says. He’s mostly distracted by Christopher on the couch, who is with Denny showing Miles, Hen and Karen’s newest foster, how to play Animal Crossing on his Switch. Miles is already developing the same starry-eyed look in his eyes Christopher himself gets around Buck. “You certainly don’t make it hard.”
“Not Wilsons, dummy,” Karen says. “Lesbians.”
Which is—not what Eddie was expecting her to say. “Uh. What?”
or, Eddie befriends May and Linda at dispatch. Then realises some stuff.

Summary
It’s—enough, to have him blinking out of his reverie, the second between the give of the bat against something, the sound of broken glass against the floorboards, and then he’s no longer on the street, or in the helicopter, or the ambulance, and he’s just back in his living room, his dark blue living room, and—
And Buck. Buck is here.
Buck, hands raised above his head. Buck, eyes wide. Buck, the same colour as the dusky floorboards.
Buck. Is here. And Eddie nearly hit him with a baseball bat.
“Oh fuck,” Eddie breathes, and the bat slips from his grasp.
or, Eddie breaks down. Buck is there.

Summary
Eddie doesn’t see it happen.
He’s still looking at the ambulance Charlie disappeared into, his mask half off in his face, and Captain Mehta is asking him, “Diaz, you want to ride with the kid to the hospital?” when the gun gets fired, only he’s been off the battlefield for over five years now and had to teach himself not to jump every time a door slams or Christopher drops a glass, and so he has the thought, the thought years of PTSD have taught him to have: you’re okay. Not a gunshot.
The spray of blood hits him, first. And then Buck drops like a fucking stone.
or, Buck is the one who gets shot instead of Eddie.

Summary
Dr Copeland had told Buck, once, gently, that he has a tendency to hurt himself with intimacy. Who he’s intimate with; who he’s not. How he’s intimate with them.
He doesn’t get it, not really, until he’s at a jewellery store and buying an engagement ring.
or, afraid of Eddie leaving, Buck proposes to Taylor. She says no.
