Severus is called to check on Harry after the mess of the end of his First Year, and to have Petunia call him a freak right out of the gate is far from encouraging. To then find the boy curled up in a corner of a locked room only confirms things.
Severus takes Harry away from that abominable place without hesitation, and perhaps even wins enough of his trust to be asked to take him in by the end of it all.

It’s only when you stop calling random words and yell, SILCO, PLEASE, do you hear a sound. You spin on your heels. “Silco?” Oh, damn this Undercity dark and its unnatural dimness. “SIL—” You cut yourself off immediately as a low groan sounds from a pile of crates you’d just passed.
There—on the ground—is a shape, hunched against the wooden cubes. No, not hunched—bowed over. As you watch, it moves toward you, four limbs shaking.
He’s crawling, you realize. Crawling toward you in desperation.
OR: you're a member of the Children of Zaun. you love Silco, and he loves you, but has insisted you keep your relationship secret. one night, vander comes back covered in blood. without silco.
OR: you find Silco and save his life after vander tries to kill him.

See, Silco had always had a strange relationship with danger. It made him a fearless leader of riots and uprisings. When going on a heist, he was the first one in and the last one out. He’d learned to pick locks and disable simple, and later more complicated, traps. Silco was the one they sent to negotiate because he wouldn’t let anyone intimidate him, no matter if their opponents wore masks and armour and carried guns. Silco was fearless. Silco flirted with death.
