It’s not that Steve specifically planned on not spending the night.
Not that he planned much at all about how last night shook out, but: he hadn’t planned to stay.
Like…in this bed. This bed-that’s-not-his.
It’s just, one: he almost never does. Stay, that is.
But also, and not insignificantly, point number two: he’d walked home with Eddie, The Freak, Munson—on the promise of his uncle working and never noticing a thing. Whatever ended up counting as ‘a thing’. And Steve: he’d still been nursing the sharper cracks in his heart over what Nancy had done, but also?
Those sharp bits had already started to sand their way back into regular shapes, fewer broken pieces to cobble together. He’d clambered loud and laughing out of that party, certainly not drunk to be anything but wholly honest, and just…fuck, you know?
Which, Steve wants it written down somewhere in the universe that he hadn’t come back with Eddie to fuck.
Not…intentionally.

Returning to Hogwarts after the war comes with a new set of issues.
For once there's nobody out to kill Harry.
But his hopes of having a relaxed year are quickly destroyed.
Sharing a room with Draco wasn't that much of an issue; Draco freaking out as soon as he sees some skin, however, is.

Summary
Even after the events in March, Steve saw Eddie as an acquaintance at best. Someone he and the group looked after, but not exactly someone he’d call a friend. Then he catches Eddie with a belt around his neck. Forced by necessity to look after Eddie, Steve tries to better understand what could’ve driven the guy to such a low point. Sharing his own issues in an attempt to empathize with him. Turns out that level of openness and vulnerability can have a major effect on a person, in more ways than just mental health.

Steve gets it fully set and then gets to cleaning. He's bopping along to Head Over Heels. There's a spot in the center of the table that's particularly stubborn — something that looks suspiciously like splattered root beer, which he full on suspects is the result of Dustin. So, Steve grabs his rag, spritzes out some of the cleaning solution, and leans across the table, and starts scrubbing.
And that's when the front door opens.
"What the fuck?"
