    Because how did you tell someone that you saw them as a dad? How did you tell them that they were one of the most important people in your life? And how did you tell them that you were afraid, if that truth was out there in the universe, spoken, they would be taken away from you too?

    And then Peter begins to fear that the universe has heard him regardless.

    Tony, meanwhile, is just trying to keep his kid safe.

    “I’ve known Tony for nearly forty years,” Rhodey said quietly. “And I’ve seen him through a lot of lows.”
    Peter nodded as Rhodey turned to stare distantly out the windshield rather than looking at Peter.
    “In forty years, after everything, I’ve never seen him as broken as losing you.”
