Summary
The Thunderbolts knew about Sam, in a way. Somewhat. They knew, of course, that he and Bucky were friends, but not of their relationship. They knew that things had been complicated, with the argument over the Avengers title.
Suffice to say, his teammates did not know that whenever Bucky left the tower, it was either to drive four hours to D.C. or to return to his (and Sam’s, at this point) Brooklyn apartment: the apartment that had two toothbrushes on the bathroom counter, an I LOVE CAPTAIN AMERICA mug in the kitchen sink, and a frankly impressive collection of vintage R&B vinyls.
And Bucky wanted to keep it that way.

(inspired by the many tiktok comments under heartbreaking mlm ship edits going "do they know it's legal now?" I'm here to propose that no, Bucky does not know it's legal now. nobody really talks about the legalization of gay marriage anymore when you really think of it. it doesn't change too much but it's kind of funny that he just...doesn't know).
A short-ish getting together fic where Sam convinces Bucky to go on a mini roadtrip through Texas, through which he finally finds out that gay marriage is legal.

The idea is so horrifying that it stuns Charles into silence for a couple seconds. “I didn’t know that. Why didn’t I know that?”
Edwin’s shoulders tense. “The whole thing is bloody tragic enough as it is.”
Grabbing his wrist, Charles begins marching them back in the direction of the pond they used to get here.
Edwin doesn’t resist, but he does argue, because of course he does. “Charles, where are we going?”
“St. Hilarion’s. We’ve got a new case, don’t we?”
