Daya’s cheeks were scarlet with cold, matching her dyed faux jacket that she wrapped tightly around her. She rushed through the winter winds of Chicago, hardly able to keep her eyes open. It was frigid and snowing lightly. If she had taken her time, walked slowly, she might’ve noticed how beautiful it was. Instead, she shoved herself through the nooks and crannies of people crowding the sidewalk with only the warmth of her destination in mind. The visual of a warm mug in her hands, the crinkle as her head would lean back at a joke her friend would make. A twinge of a smile twitched at the corner of her lips. The thought spread comfort through her bones and prompted her to relax her shoulders, but they immediately tensed when she spotted auburn hair from the corner of her eye. The person claiming it was only feet away from her, nearest the buildings on her right.
Her breath caught in her throat. She had only a moment to process it all. Daya’s eyes took inventory of the inches of hair that had grown, down to her hand holding someone else’s, and the girl whose hand was being held. A girl she knew.

Katya’s fingers are sliding across the hot, damp skin of Trixie’s palm, her callouses are tickling her and then she’s tracing a blue vein under the orange lamplight down Trixie’s wrist, just a little ways up her inner arm. Trixie shivers and her fingers twitch.
