Summary
Dean and Castiel both know exactly what sits between them, and both keep choosing not to act on it because they believe crossing that line would compromise the work.
On a hunt that takes them through stairwells, bars, motel rooms, and back to the bunker, that restraint becomes its own language: long looks, near-touches, private pauses, and the constant effort of pretending nothing is happening when everything is.
But the distance they keep trying to maintain starts becoming a liability of its own, especially when the hunt turns dangerous and the fear of losing each other stops feeling theoretical.
As the case closes, Dean and Cas are finally forced to admit that what they have built together was never neutral, and that choosing each other does not have to cost them the joy, trust, and companionship that have always made them strongest.

His fluffy hair at the front, clumped pieces at the back where he’d slid his fingers in a mere few minutes before. His pretty green eyes that look hazel or even brown in this light, the dark circles he gets when he drinks framing them like intricate paintings. A satisfied, bloody smile.
Mike isn’t satisfied. He swallows thickly, choking down the words 'don’t you want more?'
Or: Will dresses as a vampire for a college halloween party, but Mike thinks his costume isn’t bloody enough. Will lets him fix it. Mike goes into a crisis.
