Bucky picks at the delicate fabric to reveal a silken black lining underneath. He holds it up in front of him and suddenly it’s like he can see himself looking at it, like he’s in a department store picking out his size, wondering if he should take it to a fitting room. He wants to hold it against his body, low on his hips.
Bucky drops the skirt like it's caught on fire.
“Uh,” he calls out, panicked and wavery.
Then he stops because he doesn’t know what to say now, or even that he wants to say it.

Technically speaking, it wasn’t stealing. Sure, maybe the coat wasn’t his, but it was his de facto husband’s and that was close enough. Probably. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d been arrested regardless and, in his opinion, it was all for the greater good.
The dark blue wool coat was carefully folded away and tucked into an old suit box. It, and a well-worn sketchbook, were packed into a leather bag slung across his shoulder as he ducked into a little unmarked shop. It was with the sweetest, most innocent smile on his face that he set the bag on the counter, easing out the clothing box and opening the lid.

Bucky thinks he does it to remind himself that he can be good. He has killed sixty-eight men, fourteen women, and one child. He remembers doing it. He remembers all of them.
But Steve is good. Steve is good, and Bucky is carrying Steve’s child.
That means that maybe a part of Bucky is good, too.
