Summary
Cardan hasn’t seen all sides of Jude Duarte. The thing that differs from his and most everyone’s understanding of her, is that he knows it. Knows she’s more than just a human girl who got lucky, knows that the danger of her isn’t that she wants the king’s favour, but that she doesn’t care for it.
And yet, it’s somehow still a surprise when he felts the point of her dagger at his throat again. If nothing else, he hadn’t thought she could move so quietly. They pause there for a moment, the king on his balcony, the Queen in the shadows behind him. A decanter of wine rests on an elegantly wrought table where he had been about to indulge.
A shame he hadn’t started sooner.

There’s heat in him, too. I make a mental catalogue of all my weapons, knowing he can’t hurt me and feeling comfort in the routine anyway. He doesn’t need his freedom to get under my skin. He does that well enough by existing.

It’s a year after the Battle of the Serpent, and in the midst of dishing out punishment and learning how to rule, Jude Duarte has found her footing. The first mortal queen of Faerie, the first to ever be chosen by the king and the land. It’s a title she intends to hold onto for years to come, even if the blood running through her veins will expire long before Cardan reaches his middle age.
But despite being crowned with the power she had dreamed of her whole life, there are some parts of her that can’t seem to leave. She might be a queen, but she can still feel pain. There are days where power can’t chase it away.
