“I have a proposition for you,” Cardan says, soundlessly swooping in behind Jude's back. As if having appeared from thin air. She can picture it in her head, without looking at him; how he would have that amused, mischievous glint in his eye that would dance in the moonlight, how his cheeks would be painted carefully with ridiculous amounts of gold shimmer, how he would be smiling that wicked mouth of his. The girl shivered—there were not enough words in the world to describe how intensely she hated Cardan Greenbriar.
“Go away, Cardan.” She said, so tired her voice came out flat, toneless.
“Oh? I think you’ll quite like what I have to offer,” he says easily, moving to sit beside her on the river bank, unbothered by the dirt. He lazily twirled his goblet and looked into the star spattered ashen-grey sky wistfully. “Marry me.”
When Jude get's herself into a scandal she can not claw herself out of, not this time, she is given a proposition by Cardan - her enemy. To marry him and become royalty. So rather foolishly, she accepts.

Summary
Jude wakes up thinking it's the day of the tournament, but then realizes her bed is different, and Cardan is in that bed. Nothing makes sense to her as Cardan begins to tell her that it's already multiple years after the tournament and they are now married and king and queen. Jude has to navigate this new life that she now supposedly has, as a unknown threat begins grow.
