“Em?” Andy asked softly, peering up at the other woman with clear concern.
That only seemed to make the woman laugh harder, though the sound lacked its usual humor.
“Em,” she tried again, reaching a hand across the table to rest on one of hers. Breathing a sigh of relief when Emily didn’t flinch away from her touch, Andy met her eyes again.
“You want me to come as your plus-one,” Emily drawled, all traces of laughter dissipated, “to Miranda Priestly’s home in the Hamptons.”

Emily stopped. Around them, the restaurant went on. She looked at Andy, who had said the sentence fast before she could talk herself out of it, and now looked slightly stunned by her own mouth, but she didn’t take anything back.
"I'm sorry," Emily said. "What?"
"Fake-date me, instead."

Andrea’s confidence faltered for the first time. “What?”
“In what universe would anybody believe that?”

In the span of three minutes, three catastrophic events take place in Emily Charlton's life. First, her ex-husband Frank announces his engagement to a woman called Francesca. Second, Emily agrees to attend a double-date dinner to celebrate said engagement, despite not dating anyone. Third, for lack of -literally- any other option, Andrea ends up being her date to said dinner.
