Even tried to pry it out of him, the burning hatred he must have at the world for dealing him such a shitty hand. But, alas, he found nothing; the boy was completely happy, and Thomas couldn’t do anything about it.

Thomas tries to find any sort of flaw, because he hates the fact that Newt isn't one of his targets--but when he gets to see a crack in the boy's happy facade, the urge to protect him grows instead of his tendencies of violence.

He couldn’t help but stare; if he were crazy enough, he might’ve said that Newt knew it was him, and he felt the same way. But, alas, he wasn’t quite there yet.

Newt smiled at him, laughing to himself. “Thanks, dad.” Thomas rolled his eyes, pulling his phone out from his pocket. With a quick motion, he unlocked it and turned it towards Newt. He had a new contact opened up.
“Phone number?” Thomas sheepishly grinned at him. Newt felt his gut twist as he realised that Thomas was the first person to ask for his phone number all year; with a smile, he took it as he entered in his contact info.
A few seconds passed of Thomas’s tapping, waiting anxiously for Newt to finish. Newt gave him a smile, handing the phone back with a quick tap to the desk. “Here ya, go, Tommy.” Thomas wrinkled his nose in confusion, tilting his head a little.
“Tommy?”
“Yes, Tommy.”or
Thomas is hopelessly in love with an oblivious Newt, who tends to make romantic gestures without thinking about it first.
