He lays it out objectively like a deck of cards, faces staring up at Atsushi and into the distance of the inevitable future. It’s so matter-of-factly that he almost misses the indigence churning beneath those words, because Akutagawa is a storm sealed and sometimes he lets things slip, howling winds and cracks of lightning, even if he doesn’t mean to.

It‘s been one month since Atsushi had killed his best friend. On accident of course, but still he was gone. Akutagawa, his personal guard and only person who ever believed in him, was gone. And since that fateful night he had been imprisoned in this wretched water tank, doing lobs and whatever party tricks you could think of, for these people’s amusement. God, how he hated circuses! Though he had to give it to these people, aka the shitty pirates that kidnapped him and made him kill his best friend, no one had ever thought of a circus like this one. A circus on a ship that travels from harbor to harbor, so beautiful, colorful and childish, that almost everyone forgot what these people used to be. Of course it did help people forget that they had Atsushi, a real life merman.

The threat only weighed down the heavy atmosphere more. Dazai hasn't necessarily killed since he made that promise to Odasaku, but not killing was never a specific part of the promise to begin with. Out of every act of violence Odasaku would condone, protecting Atsushi wouldn't even need to be discussed.
Or: An unknown ability user is causing havoc within the Port Mafia, so they request the help of the ADA. Dazai and Atsushi go to investigate, but instead get caught up in the ability that’s taken out so many. Akutagawa and Chuuya are not amused.

"You wound me Kunikida-kun~!"
"SHUT IT DAZA-" Kunikida gets interrupted by a bunch of blue light suddenly surrounding Dazai.
"AHH!" He yells as he covers his eyes.
When he uncovers them, they widen in shock. Dazai.. was replaced with a child.
