    Summary

Ciri leaves Kaer Morhen. She doesn't understand why Geralt is bringing a bard with them. She doesn't want Geralt to bring a bard with them.

“You’ll spoil her,” Yennefer said. It was the first thing she had said all morning.

Jaskier shrugged and petted the horse’s muzzle. “Him? It’s a gelding, so maybe not a him. Hm, in people having your balls cut off doesn’t make you not a man unless you want it to but you can’t ask a horse. Anyway, not a her. And better spoiled than mad at me.”

“You’ll have both spoiled and mad at you when you run out of treats,” Ciri said, mostly to see what Jaskier would do.

He smiled blithely at her. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. No reason not to enjoy the apples while we have them, isn’t that right, Fredrick?”

“That’s not…” Ciri trailed off and Jaskier looked at her quizzically. None of the Witchers would name their horse Fredrick, but Ciri didn’t know the gelding’s proper name, wasn’t even sure which of the now dead Witchers it had belonged to. She hadn’t spent enough time in the stables to learn these things but it still felt like a failure not to know.

    Summary

Geralt has found his child surprise, the former Princess of Cintra. Very quickly he realises they're in danger from Nilfgaard. Knowing they won't stop until they have what they're after, Geralt takes Ciri and flees north. On their way, he searches for any signs of his old friends, fearing they too are in danger. In a cell in Novigrad, he finds Jaskier who seems all too happy to join them on the journey to Kaer Morhen.

As days on the road turn to weeks, Geralt can't help but realise that something is wrong with Jaskier. He avoids talking about the things they did together, he doesn't sing, he's tired all the time. The worst is when Geralt catches him with a horrible vacant look in his eyes, like his mind had fled somewhere far away and his body had just been left behind.

    Summary

Geralt unties Roach from the post, and is about to leave when there’s the sound of an altercation behind him. He turns to see two guards dragging a third man between them. The man is wearing brightly coloured clothes and struggling, not seriously, more like he’s aware that in such circumstances struggling is expected. The guards approach Geralt and drop their charge to his knees in front of him.

“Ow,” the prisoner says. Geralt recognises the bard from the tavern: a little more dishevelled, his face not improved by two black eyes and a split lip.

“This one claims he’s a friend of yours,” one of the guards says. “Caught him sniffing around the treasury but he says he knows you. Says you’ll vouch for him.”

Geralt looks down at the bard, who winks at him, then winces.

    Summary

A heart is a delicate thing, Geralt has learned over the course of his studies underneath Vesemir. So many of the parts are fragile, bird-boned and fine, and it takes deft fingers and careful handling to piece it back together when it breaks. But he learns, understands how to wield his tools to suture holes and set the small, sliver-like fractures that he can see under his microscope.

It’s a careful thing, handling a heart. Geralt just wishes more people understood that.
